Republican lose support in almost all demographics

Being out of office doesn't let someone off the hook for decisions they made while in office that are having an effect today. In this case maybe Robdawg could give us an example of the banking deregulation that Bush signed that he feels caused today's current problems?

I don't think that was the issue so much as did not enforce existing regulations. Once again, they were asleep at the wheel.

The Libertarian Party can never win over a significant population of Americans because it lacks the moral compass of Social Conservatives.

I dunno. I think we'd be better off if the Republican party went extinct and was replaced by the Libertarian party.

Liberals would love that because they would never lose another election. Look at the reaction to Ron Paul. Outside of his position on Iraq many liberals thought he was a wack job. Shoot, liberals think Republican economic positions now are heartless, what do you think they think of Libertarian positions?

If the republicans focus on social conservatism then libertarians will win more elections. Then we can have some good choices.

Hey, I love a lot of what Libertarians stand and consider myself part of the economic libertarian wing of the Republican Party. But Libertarians are not even close to winning national elections or putting people in Congress.

And if America supposedly wants so much more government in their lives now do you think they are going to just start voting Libertarian?

Which pretty much tells us that people in the US will jump ship on the party that is unpopular at the moment.

which is why democracy does not work

how many citizens think beyond their own self interest to the best interests of the nation, and then wonder why neither do their elected officials

is that to imply people should pick a party (D or R) and only vote for them regardless of the party's performance?

and social conservatives can never win over a significant population of Americans because they lack a moral compass (e.g. they are bigots and hypocrites).

That's not how politics work. Libertarian won't build a succesfull coalition worry about what Democrats think. Libertarians are, at this time, better placed to build a winning coalition than Republicans are who have narrowed their party to irrelevence via ideological purity. Libertarians have an oppurtunity to co-opt economic conservatives, who could care less about social conservatism, and tap into the money they can provide. If Libertarians want to be a force alls they have to do is start working on building a broad based coalition. I don't think Republicans can do that any more.

That's not how Libertarians can do it, they have to work on co-opting the parts of the Republican coalition that the far right wing and social conservatives have alienated. Business men, economic conservatives, independents, moderates, the professional classes, etc, etc. While the Republican party is shrinking by insisting on ideological purity and intellectual conformity the Libertarians can drive a stake through their hearts by coalition building. So that's what Libertarians need to focus on. How to build a broad based coalition.

That's true, at this time Libertarians are not a viable alternative but that can change if the Republican leaders insist on going down their present destructive road. Those that the wingnuts and social conservatives are alienating can be co-opted by the libertarian party.

I joined the Democratic party because the Republican party is hopeless and no longer represents my values and becuase there is no real viable alternative to them, at this time, other than the Democrats. That can change. Libertarians can pick up those the Republicans alienate by working to build a broad based coalition. They need to focus on party building before they can focus on getting people elected.

they hopefully can be good for at least checks and balances. You can't possibly think every dem policy is best for us.
Cap and scheme
no drilling
WTF?

I dunno Topper, at this stage I think it probably would be best for the nation if the GOP were allowed to go extinct and to have another political party fill that gap. The Libertarian party would be the obvious but by no means only choice.

What I do know is I can't freaking wait for college football.
The OSU vs USC game on your home turf with Pryor being a vastly superior QB should be a fun beat down. Looks like THE big no confernce game of the year right now.
