Germany's conversion to renewables much of which was done at a time when renewables were substantially more expensive than coal. A surcharge was put on people's electric bills to pay for the renewables. This made German electricity more expensive. Germany should have waited for a while 2 let the cost of renewables to come down. Renewables currently being cheaper than coal pretty much says it all. Coal will probably never completely go away but it will continue to fade.
