More proof of the absolute insanity of the Climatistas, apparently desperate to cause lower temps, which are disastrous.
Cold kills far more people/life than warmth ever has. Warmer temps = more arable land, as well.
Geologists reveal what caused the 57-million-year freezing on Earth
Australian geologists have solved the mystery of what triggered and sustained an extreme ice age that gripped the Earth more than 700 million years ago. The study, published in the journal Geology, reveals how the Earth's thermostat works and how sensitive the climate is to changes in atmospheric carbon dioxide.
The researchers used plate tectonic models to simulate the evolution of the Earth's surface and carbon dioxide emission from underwater volcanoes. They found that the onset of the ice age coincided with a period of very low volcanic activity, which reduced the amount of greenhouse gas in the atmosphere.
They also discovered that a large volcanic province in Canada formed before the ice age was eroded by glaciers and rain, further lowering carbon dioxide levels by absorbing it from the air.
The study's lead author, Dr. Adriana Dutkiewicz from the University of Sydney, said: "Imagine the Earth almost completely frozen over. That's just what happened about 700 million years ago; the planet was covered in ice from the poles to the equator, and temperatures dropped. We now think we have cracked the mystery: it was caused by historically low volcanic carbon dioxide emissions, aided by weathering of a large pile of volcanic rocks in Canada."
The ice age, also known as the Sturtian glaciation, lasted 57 million years, from 717 to 660 million years ago. This was a time before dinosaurs and complex plants existed on land, and the only life forms were simple microbes.
Dr. Dutkiewicz said: "Various causes have been proposed for the start and the end of this extreme ice age, but the most puzzling aspect is why it lasted so long - a time span hard for us humans to comprehend."
The team used the EarthByte computer models to explore the ice age's cause and duration. They found that the volcanic carbon dioxide emissions remained low throughout the ice age, preventing the Earth from warming.
