Re-Reading "The Rift" by Walter J. Williams

Fascinating look at what could happen if the New Madrid fault triggered another major earthquake (in the book, they do an 8.9 quake).

As most of you probably know. the New Madrid fault is in southern Missouri; it was active in 1811-1812; they estimated maybe 8.7? Due to the shape of the plates in the area, it was felt as far as the east coast. At the time, not very many people lived near it.

Now, St. Louis, Memphis and other cities would be impacted; and those cities don't have buildings built to withstand earthquakes like California does. There is a LOT of brick in Missouri.

Fascinating to me since I spend most of my childhood/early adult years in the midwest.

Along with examining the physical destruction, it looks at different ways people might react... some good, some not so good.

Anyway, if you're into that kind of thing, it's a good read.
