One of the four former Vanderbilt football players charged with gang raping an unconscious woman inside a dorm room on campus described the victim’s then-boyfriend as the ringleader of the appalling assault.
Co-defendant “Tip” McKenzie testified against Brandon Vandenburg, saying that he “made sure he was in control,” and that he handed out condoms to his three former teammates before they allegedly assaulted the woman.
McKenzie’s two-day testimony capped off the state’s high-profile case against Vandenburg, the second former Vanderbilt football player to be tried with the woman’s gang rape.
On Thursday, McKenzie said that Vandenburg was “amped and aggressive and bossy” on the night of the assault and that he even slapped the unconscious woman to prove to his teammates that she wouldn’t wake up while they attacked her.
The woman’s only recollection of the night was drinking a blue drink Vandenburg served her and waking up dishevelled the following day, she said. Vandenburg, who had been dating the victim for about two weeks at the time of the assault, had told the woman he took her to his room to take care of her after she drank too much.
She only learned of her assault after investigators told her of the graphic photos and videos which were found on Vandenburg’s phone.
Prosecutors played the videos to support their case against the victim’s former boyfriend, who can be heard laughing while he filmed the attack.
