Randi Weingarten links school choice to segregation

Things must not be going well for the teachers union.

Randi Weingarten’s Racial Demagoguery

The union head likens choice to segregation. What would Polly Williams think?

Randi Weingarten, the leader of the American Federation of Teachers, has insulted millions of students and families. In a speech at a union conference last month, Ms. Weingarten claimed that the school-choice movement has its roots in 1960s-era racism. Charter schools and vouchers, she asserted, “are only slightly more polite cousins of segregation.”

This is a blatant attempt to rewrite history. The modern education-reform movement was originally propelled by African-Americans and progressives. Fannie Lewis, a Cleveland councilwoman and grandmother, fought for the Cleveland Scholarship Program that was enacted in 1995. Polly Williams, a Wisconsin state representative, helped push through Milwaukee’s early school-choice program in 1990.

Williams, a Democrat and former Black Panther, found few allies for school choice among her natural constituencies. But she firmly believed something had to be done to help children in failing schools. So she joined a diverse coalition, including conservative Gov. Tommy Thompson, to launch the Milwaukee program, which is still running strong more than 25 years later.

Ms. Weingarten must know these facts, because they have been exhaustively chronicled. Yet she actively hides and obfuscates this history. What’s really motivating her over-the-top rhetoric? The answer lies in the numbers. While thousands of children are on waiting lists for charter schools, the AFT’s membership is in decline. As the union’s head count drops, so does its political clout.

Figures compiled by union-watcher Mike Antonucci show the seriousness of the situation Ms. Weingarten faces. The AFT routinely claims it has 1.6 million members, but that number, Mr. Antonucci says, “is not strictly accurate.” Here’s his math: He cites U.S. Labor Department filings that show the AFT reported 1,544,143 members last year. More than 600,000 of them belonged to affiliates that are merged with the National Education Association, the other big American teachers union. Although both the AFT and NEA count these people as full members, the two unions must split their dues.

Mr. Antonucci further says that nearly 357,000 AFT members are retired, meaning they pay no dues. Another 330,000 members work only part time. “The bottom line: AFT’s 1.6 million members equate to a dues-paying equivalent of 854,000 full-time employed teachers,” he writes.

Ms. Weingarten likes to style herself as a defender of the urban poor, but her recommendations for education tell another story. Her primary concern seems to be self-preservation. But the biggest threat to her power and position won’t be from the Trump administration or school-choice advocates. It will be from AFT members who recognize that she’s undermining the union’s credibility for her own gain.

Of course this is a pile on as everything is now about race. I think it is funny that JPPs two biggest virtue signalers have a problem with this.

This is what happens when you cave to the left trying to curry favor. Suck it

This has nothing to do with the left. At the end of the day to each his own but if you're on the right this march should be unacceptable. But the desire to protect Trump for not doing th right thing on day one makes people accepting towards the behavior.

He DID the right thing and was totally honest. Can't ask for more than that.

Randi hasn't thought this through, or is unaware of the facts.

I grew up in a suburb of ultra-liberal Boston, MA where there was no school choice. There was forced busing in Boston proper, which forced families out to the suburbs. Thus segregation occurred by town. Each town kept its own district to keep it all segregated, thus high administration costs.

My kids grew up here, in the conservative South, in a suburb of Winston-Salem. The entire county is one consolidated school district, and any kid can go to any school in the district if he meets the age and academic qualifications. Starting at grade 3, kids who qualify can go to a centrally located school for gifted kids. Special needs kids are also in that school. This both the top 1% and the bottom 1% can get the specialized teaching that they need. We have one school board and a centralized administrative staff so costs are low.

Were you there when the riots and fights were going on over busing? Wild time huh?

He 100% did the right thing. He didn't virtue signal for you and the left which apparently has made you sad.

Tell us again why honestly pointing out that Antifa was violent is a bad thing?

I was, but a bit young to really understand what was really going on, and although close enough to ride a bicycle into Boston was very much insulated by the goings-on.

Curious, was "Southie" a pretty rough area from your recollection? That's how I always heard it describe although when I lived in Boston in 2008 you could see pockets of gentrification starting to form

It's almost 9am.

Have Cawacko, Threedee and Damo genuflected and virtue signaled to BAC Panther that they hate Nazi's yet?

Just checking in. I would hate for them to miss an opportunity to get on board

Not understanding why it bothers you so much. Hating Nazi's is like hating Communists. Clearly you are ok with using certain words most people wouldn't so maybe you have sympathies with them, I don't know

As always you miss the point as you seek validation and praise from your political enemies who hate you.

Of course people hate Nazis. No sane person supports them. This notion that they are responsible for the election of Trump is ludicrous.

You can say you hate Nazis. But how many times do you think you need to do it?

Are liberals ever made to condemn communists for their evil acts?

You are playing into your political enemies hands. But you are too naive to see it.

Soon you will be here drunk posting about why Deshtard hates you.

Actually I care about the long term prospects of the Republican Party. (I guess ultimately it could be any party as long as they represent what I support but right now it's the Republican Party)

And unlike liberals I don't have an issue having discussions, even if we disagree, with fellow Republicans or people on the right.

And yes I think Trump not saying what he said on day two on day one was wrong then his day three statement a disaster.

Today is my five year wedding anniversary. I hope to be drunk in a couple of hours.

It was unless you were from there. I was there with my uncle once- not sure of the year but I'll guess '68 so he would have been 26 and me, 9 or 10. He was a red-headed Marine drill sergeant, grew up in blue-collar Watertown and had some buddies there, so they naturally got along. I remember cruising around in the back seat of a '59 Chevy, the one with the big rear glass window and horizontal fins, summer, windows down, the older guys looking for girls or trouble. My uncle told me to keep close and I did.

When I was in HS you just didn't go to any of the 'hoods. Southie was for the micks, the North End for the wops, Roxbury for the blacks.

I worked downtown in my early 20's, so that would have been early 80's. One of my buddies was a blonde greek kid who drove a taxi for extra cash on weekends. He had a story almost every week. The one I remember best, he was driving a little college girl from B.U. (so she would have been Jewish) through the "dark" section of town "and all the brothers were hanging out." He had one of those big Marathon cabs that were built like tanks. He was stopped in traffic and being street smart left a good amount of room from the car in front. Summer, windows down, and suddenly he hears someone yell "get the cabbie- he's white!", and sees a bunch of guys start after him. So he laid on the gas and drove right on the sidewalk to get around the jam. He said he had them jumping out of the way like monkeys.

Once three of us left work early to play racquetball at Northeastern- where one guy still had student privileges. Again, summer, windows down. We were stopped at a traffic light to cross Mass Ave, when a guy in a jacked pickup stops alongside of us and has "Dixie" playing loud on his 8 track. We didn't think anything of it until this old black guy on the corner raises his cane, points right at us, and yells "hey- they're playing Dixie!" Our driver, a North End WOP, didn't wait for the light to turn green and drove right through crossing traffic to get out of there.

Yeah, I don't care about the Republican Party. Too many in the so called party are too much like democrats.

If Never Trumpers would take off their blinders, they would see that Trump is pushing a more conservative agenda than anyone since Reagan.

We tried it the RINO way and it didn't work out so great.

I'll stop commenting on Nazis when the last one has put a bullet into its skull.

I don't need leftists to condemn Marxists. You're fucking retarded if you think I need them to.

Keep the faith, and Douchebag Donald will never let you down.
