Rallying the People Around a ‘Decency Agenda’

In a nation so politically divided, making even modest progress on critical issues can be a slog. Mr. Biden will need to rally the public behind a Decency Agenda with broad-based appeal. That means first turning down the temperature of the culture wars, backing a policy agenda with broad public support and returning to constitutional norms that served the nation well for so long.

Interesting editorial. They touched on a lot of measures that should be able to gain bipartisan support. The first portion of that sentence that you bolded ("turning down the temperature of the culture wars") is my biggest concern. The most pressing domestic issues at this moment are containing COVID and restoring the economy, but the overall biggest problem in this country is, and has been since the day it was formed, race relations. So how does Biden turn down the temperature? Conservatives have branded police reform as "defund the police". Liberals won't wait any longer. And through it all, minorities, especially black people, suffer. I don't know what he's going to do. I wish him well because we can't continue the way we have been operating forever.

why would biden, or you, want to rally people around a decency agenda with 'deplorables'? or hillbillys? rednecks? racists? illiterate southerners?

maybe you should practice what you preach, before you go preaching

Conservatives have branded police reform as defund the police? I’m pretty sure the (progressive) activists who want to defund the police came up with that name. That wasn’t a right wing invention.

Perhaps, but it was conservatives who brainwashed their robots into translating "defund the police" to "cancel every form of law enforcement everywhere".

Perhaps? I don't know the entire history of the defund the police movement but I had (black) friends post on Facebook after the George Floyd killing about Angela Davis and the defund the police movement in the '60's. Calls from #BLM to defund the police came out immediately after George Floyd was killed. And yes, there are #BLM members and activists who literally want to defund the police and eliminate police departments. That's not a false statement or exaggeration. There are others who use defund the police to mean various types of reform.

There's a reason prominent Democrats have come out and said it's a poor phrase to use because it means different things to different people. Not to put words in your mouth but my guess is as a liberal you may not agree with those on the left who literally want to eliminate police departments, thus ignoring them and claiming people on the right are brainwashed robots.

Good and I hope it works. However, with far LWers seeking to permanently silence anyone to the right of themselves, Biden's dream will never come into reality.

How are the leftys supposed to do that? The right is in the silencing business. If Biden reaches out that hand of friendship you will swat it with a stick. t.

It's a little bit of A and a little bit of B. If anyone serious and in a position of power actually proposed eliminating law enforcement, then that would be disastrously stupid. In my experience, people who used the unfortunate phrase were talking about various kinds of reform or abolishing existing police departments and replacing them with new law enforcement mechanisms. That is simply a no brainer.

He only has an account here to troll. I never saw him make a point before I put him on ignore. And now I don't have to see anything he says. Mazel.

You trolled me first with your false accusations about being a Trumpster, son.

Agreed about the right. Where you and I disagree is that I do not see much difference from the Left....especially on this thread. Do you consider BidenPresident and Diesel to be solid members of the Left? Representative of the general LW POV?

If Biden reaches out that hand of friendship you will swat it with a stick..
There it is; good ol' fashioned LW bias and hate. Why should I even post since you've already made up your mind about me? So much for your "Decency Agenda".

You'll rarely get an argument from me about wanting to improve government agencies. So if we can make the police forces more effective and efficient, and thus increase safety, I'm all for it. But Oakland is a great example of real world realities. The defund the police movement is in full force trying to make changes while the murder rate in the City is skyrocketing and even those sympathetic to the cause are calling for more police officers.

Not easy to make changes when people aren't feeling safe.

That's absolutely true. But if problems don't get worse, then they stay the same. There has been no significant improvements. So we can't wait for things to taper off so we can focus on reform. Things won't even begin to taper off until we reform. The issue needs leadership. I'm not sure to what extent I support the federal government intervening, but local communities just aren't cutting it. There's got to be a way to go left foot, right foot, left foot, right foot.

One of the biggest impediments to change are the police unions (not all that different than teachers unions but that's a different subject). And I know, I'm another right-winger attacking unions. But it's true. We've known this for years and even left-leaning/liberal publications have reported on it. Police unions have fought changes to make police officers more accountable. And they've largely been very successful.

The political conundrum is those on the right usually go after public unions, however they see an opportunity to win police officer votes so they aren't going to go against police union wishes. And those on the left may not like the police unions, but public unions are some of their biggest supporters so they are hesitant to go after them. Thus many reform/accountability measures across the country in local and state legislatures have gone to defeat due to the power of the police unions.

well obviously not......they merely want to cancel the forms of law enforcement that they remove funding from.........if they remove half the funding they only want to cancel half the law enforcement, right?......
