Repent, America!
I have this great idea that I want to share with you. It's called, "White History Month". It would honor only white people that made this country great, and fought for what was right and just. For instance, it would include George Washington, Abraham Lincoln, Douglas MacArthur and Martin Luther King Jr. Wait, we can't include King, he's not white. Anyway, throughout this month, we would have posters around campus remind us of the contributions made by white people, we would have TV commercials on the subject, etc.
Sounds like a terrible idea, doesn't it?
Instead of that, we could have "Black History Month". It would honor only black people that helped make this country great, and fought for what was right and just. For instance, it would include Fredrick Douglass, George Washington Carver, Martin Luther King Jr., and Abraham Lincoln. Wait, we can't include Lincoln, he's not black. Anyway, throughout this month, we would have posters around campus remind us of the contributions made by black people, we would have TV commercials on the subject, etc. That's sounds awfully familiar, doesn't it? It too, sounds like a pretty terrible idea, doesn't it?
The reason both of those ideas are awful, is because they are racist. One definition of racism is the idea that "individuals should be treated differently according to their racial designation." Every February, we do exactly that. I'm not saying that we shouldn't honor these individuals, but we should honor the individual, not because of what color he or she happens to have.
We have Presidents Day, to honor all those presidents who worked tirelessly to make this country what it is today.
We have Martin Luther King Jr. Day, to remind us of the work he did, to rid us of a horrible injustice. Every time we celebrate Black History Month, we are doing the exact opposite of what he would have wanted.
We are setting aside a group of people, solely because of their race.
