This idea that he would never point it towards the camera (not directly at the lens, but in that direction) during the filming of a western is idiotic. You know you've seen scenes in movies with guns where the guy is looking like he's pointing the gun at you, not at your face but at you.... They do that by having the guy point the gun at the person operating the camera. (Ones that look like it is pointed at your face they do that by pointing it specifically at the lens).
It isn't like I like Alec Baldwin and think that he's awesome, or that I hate him. I think he did a terrible Trump impression during SNL, it wasn't funny because it took nothing from reality. However, I understand that saying dumb stuff like "why was he pointing it at her" when she had asked him to point it at her so she could get that shot, is just saying dumb stuff.
While I don't take, "They told me is was safe" excuses when you are working with guns, he's the producer he hired the safety folks and didn't control gun safety on his set, that's all on him. This is a crime of negligence and stupidity. This idea that he meant to shoot her is preposterous, though. This is a crime more like DUI, there's a victim, you are responsible, but it was never your intention to hurt anyone. The negligent way he allowed unsafe gun practices on his set makes him responsible for any injury on that set let alone one where he was holding the gun and killed someone. He should face the consequences.
