Rip tides are not a cause for drowning. Being a native, well-educated and old-enough to know better, this seems to be an unnecessary death.

Rip currents can be spotted from shore. Harder to see when you're in the water. Best to start swimming parallel to the beach until no longer being pulled out to sea.

Page Pate, a prominent Georgia attorney whose legal analysis was sought by numerous national and local news outlets, died in an accidental drowning Sunday on St. Simons Island. He was 55.

Pate’s death was confirmed Tuesday morning by Pate, Johnson & Church, an Atlanta-based law firm, and the cause of death has been confirmed by the Glynn County coroner. He reportedly died in a rip current while swimming....

...Pate was also a founding member of the Georgia Innocence Project, a non-profit organization dedicated to helping wrongfully convicted individuals, according to the firm.

How to Escape Rip Currents

The Short Answer: Stay afloat, yell for help, swim parallel to the shore. Do not exhaust yourself fighting the current.
