Putin did not invade during the Trump years.

He did not need to invade. Trump was working Ukraine to surrender and give Putin what he wanted, but Trump wanted Rudy (as Trumps proxy) to be cut in first, as they demanded Ukraine turn over natural gas and oil rights back to Putins oligarch.

It was the same game Trump and Kushner did to Qatar to strong arm them into giving Jarad the first $2B to save his failing COndo building and the embarrassment of his first big Trump like bankruptcy. Qatar looked at the deal and said 'no thanks', like every big Finance org did, and then Jarad chatter with MBS, and suddenly they had a plan. Saudi would announce they were going to invade Qatar and Trump turned on our ally Qatar and said he would consider supporting Saudi invading and taking over Qatar. Qatar then cut Jarad a quick $2B and the entire thing went away.

It just needed a bit of time.
