Poor Trumppers!

Hello cawacko,

How is a gov't agency going to run social media? Is it just going to take over companies after they are created? (and not all social media that we use is created in the U.S.)

I believe I proposed that a partially government funded public corporation similar to CPB would run a well moderated social media service.

Then I had to explain what CPB was.

SMH.

You haven't explained how they are going to take over these companies. Are Twitter, Facebook, Tik Tok, Instagram, etc. etc. all going to give up autonomy to this gov't group? Is the gov't going to pay to take this new role? What are shareholders and the company Boards going to do?

Sounds like you'll have to explain that because that is your impression, but not what I ever said.

Hello cawacko,

Haha. There’s so much going on here. For starters is Musk really walking away or is this just a negotiating tactic as with the slowing economy and drop in stock price the firm is not worth near what he has proposed to pay. Will the Board sue to force Musk to go through with the sale?

Separately, Twitter is an absolute cesspool. Yes there are certain benefits to it but on the whole it’s a net negative to society. Depending on who you ask it’s also a very racist and unwelcoming place. So ironic folks say they will leave Twitter if Musk buys it but are willing to stay on it otherwise.

I followed our conversation back to the first point I commented on social media, and how I thought that capitalism was screwing it up. Here is what I sad:

"Social media obviously requires far more active and stringent regulation. Perhaps a public corporation such as CPB should run it.

Social media does not appear to be a good institution to be run for profit.

All they are doing is promoting the most salacious participation in a plainly obvious effort to generate participation. All that does is encourage shock factor to flood the system with brainless teen age garbage. High quality participation is then diminished.

Capitalism trashes social media up. "

From that, you felt that I was proposing that the government should buy twitter for $44 billion.

No, that was neither what I said nor intended.

My comment was in response to your comment:

"Separately, Twitter is an absolute cesspool. Yes there are certain benefits to it but on the whole it’s a net negative to society. Depending on who you ask it’s also a very racist and unwelcoming place. "

That got me to wondering if there is a way we can improve social media with government action.

I do think there should be a 'public option' to social media. I am quite curious to see how a non-profit organization would run social media.

Or perhaps there can be some government regulation of commercial social media.

Should commercial social media be required to submit their SW and algorithms to a government regulator for review? Should a government regulator be able to prevent commercial social media from using certain algorithms which lead to social danger?

We, the people, do depend on government for protection. Perhaps this is a new realm in which government needs to get involved.

How would that get paid for?

Tax social media, of course.

It doesn't seem quite wholesome that people should become billionaires by providing a way for hatred to be disseminated.

And when it gets to the point where it is being used to gather people to attack the Capitol, obviously something needs to be done.
