You're missing the point that people don't want to raise their score just to give them a middle finger. If it bothers people to be downvoted, you should make the negative reactions neutral to score, like some of them already are. This way, you appease both sides. That may be needed because I've seen a few posters that already have one foot out the door.

They are nervous. Something IS wrong for them.

1. They are losing their audience, which considers them more and more irrrelevant.
2. They are incapable of being happy. They literally can't afford to be happy. This is related to their programming (I have already listed the program of a Democrat).
3. Once a stance is taken, it must be taken to more extreme arguments to continue to justify it, since people quickly get bored of their message. Examples of this is the progression from 'global cooling' to 'coming ice age' to 'global warming' to 'climate change' to 'climate crisis' and on into whatever the hell they want to call it. Another is lengthening out <random letters>LBTGQ<random letters>.
4. To a Democrat, something is always wrong. Again, this is related to their programming.


Program for a Democrat:
1. Pronounce Doom and Gloom.
2. Blame in Republicans and/or Trump.
3. Throw insults.
4. repeat until dead.
