Here is what has changed in our politics.
The old expression of "election have consequences" was one that meant 'the party that won would get to govern on the election planks they campaigned upon' and the party that lost would largely allow it. There was always some push by the losing party to soften the agenda but no real belief that it was, in fact, the losing party who would get to govern and set the terms for policy and legislation, or go scorched earth. The belief was that going scorched earth would hurt the arsonists more than the other party.
Over the last few years the Magats on the extreme edge, have taken to saying, even though we are small minority within our own party, EVERYTHING has to be done EXACTLY as we dictate or we will torch the party.
And they have torched their own party over and over again. And now they are extending that to the Dems, saying 'yes you won, but you still must govern as if we won and only legislation written the way we want it will pass'.
What is the big difference in this now, that so emboldens Magats?
it is the extreme gerrymandering that creates safe districts regardless of how deplorable or dangerous the politician is. There is no risk of losing your seat for going scorched earth, even if the country is burning and the vast, vast majority hold different views.
Thus why Trump was pushing to crash the Debt Ceiling despite the over whelming harm it would do to ALL Americans and almost certainly cause a world wide Great recession.
Thus why Trump was pushing not allow the Continuing Resolutions hoping that government would crash and America would suffer.
Thus why Trump wants the border kept "open" for at least another 12 months and wants nothing to done to change that.
The arsonist (Trump and Magats) believe that if the country suffers (as they did in Covid) citizen often seek 'change' in leadership, even if they are not specifically blaming the leadership.
So you can guarantee for all time going forward unless this gerry mandering thing can be corrected, nation wide, the goal of those in the extremes will ALWAYS be to harm America hoping it harms the majority party and gains them more power. They DO NOT care about the impact on American citizens other than hoping it REALLY hurts them and they REALLY react.
