This thread concerns no particular police killing. Those wishing to discuss the facts of any particular case are asked to initiate a thread based on that case. This thread intends another direction entirely.
So far as I’m aware, enforcement agencies are not required to compile statistics of those killed by police. Lacking solid statistics, police killings documented by news aggregator KilledByPolice.net likely fall short [perhaps significantly] of actual police killings. The thing is that without the stats, there simply is no way to know one way or another.
The value of data compiled from news services publications may [and likely will] be questioned. After all, it isn’t as if the site reflects scientific methodology. But the hundreds of police killings that ARE documented can argue for mandatory reporting of killings by all enforcement agencies [city, state and federal [including the FBI, HS, plus companies employed by public officials for policing services, etc.]. Perhaps it is time that reporting of police killings were mandatory…
That said, the KilledByPolice.net documentation indicates that for 2015, police killings increased over 2014 by 8.3%.
So what does this mean?
More exactly, in a time of failing cities, collapsing infrastructure and budget austerity, combined with a burgeoning surveillance/security apparatus at home plus massive militaristic ventures abroad – what might an increase in police killings indicate about social relations in the US?
Have we the courage to address this?
