Pirates

Imagine them wanting this Corporate pillaging of their country to stop and being willing to take illegal actions to stop illegal actions aimed at them?

Bingo.

There are about a thousand intelligent questions that could be asked .. such as, what effectiveness if any is piracy having against the plague of the dumping of global toxic waste off Somalian shores and the over-fishing of their waters by giant corporate vessels?

That would be an intellignet question .. and my answer would be that there ain't (eb) much dumping happening now off Somalian shores .. nor are there many giant ships pulling up large nets full of fish and depleteing Somalians of their resources in their waters.

By the way, they don't call themselves pirates, they believe they're protecting their own waters and call themselves the Volunteer Somali Coast Guard .. and I just made an argument of how they are.

None of this is going to be told by MSM.

The French heard one threat, stormed a boat and killed and arrested the "Pirates". The US, they hire a local to talk to the dudes on the radio.

Just one minor detail, one of the French hostages was also killed. How did that get left out? If the US had the same result the RW would skewer Obama for that too. No?

Let me ask another intelligent question that could be asked .. How should the US lead on this issue?

We could lead the effort in the UN to protect the waters off Somalia and other African and Latin American countries from the dumping of toxic wastes and the over-fishing of their waters.

We could look to exhaust ALL non-lethal means of securing the American-held captain with the understanding that there are 300 other held captives to consider.

We can offer to help protect Somalian waters FOR SOMALIANS without a permenant US presence.

Look guys, I'm as sympathetic to the pirates as anyone here. But to pretend that they are doing this because of the dumping is absolutely fucking retarded. This has a lot more to do with the lack of a functioning central government since '91 and the economic hardships in the northern, unrecognized region of Puntland than it does with environmental damage.

The government officials in Puntland are suspected to be complicit in the attacks. And considering the unwillingness of the international community to recognize Puntland's independence, I can't say I blame them for their complicity. They one of the two areas of Somalia that have been able to bring some degree of stability, but the international community refuses to recognize it. This is not some eco-activist statement, this is the harsh reality of life in a country the world forgot.

The US dealt with this before, ages ago.
When pirates were captured, they were hung.
No questions, no trials, no appeals.
The piracy stopped.

Maybe it's time to do the same.

Yeah we took care of pirates. Very good care of some of them that were working for us.

It's fucking retarded to pretend you know more about the Somalians than do the Somalians.

The issue of toxic dumping has been af the forefront of their demands on the global community for a long time. Obviously, you weren't aware that.

There is lkittle doubt tha Puntland is complicit in this, but they see it as their only way to defend their resources, land, and people .. and they have been effective in giving second thoughts to any vessels crossing their path.

The Constitution deals with letters of marque, but the system of privateering hasn't really been put to use since the days of Elizabeth I...

I am surprised that groups of Navy veterans haven't petitioned Congress for letter so they can go out and have some adventure...

Well, there is a difference between a mercenary and a privateer. Most notably, a privateer operates on the high seas... You simply would not find one in Iraq, for example.

BEIJING, April 14 (Xinhuanet) -- Thousands of dolphins blocked the suspected Somali pirate ships when they were trying to attack Chinese merchant ships passing the Gulf of Aden, the China Radio International reported on Monday.

The Chinese merchant ships escorted by a China's fleet sailed on the Gulf of Aden when they met some suspected pirate ships. Thousands of dolphins suddenly leaped out of water between pirates and merchants when the pirate ships headed for the China's.

The suspected pirates ships stopped and then turned away. The pirates could only lament their littleness befor the vast number of dolphins. The spectacular scene continued for a while.

China initiated its three-ship escort task force on Dec. 26 last year after the United Nations Security Council called on countries to patrol gulf and waters off Somalia, one of the world's busiest marine routes, where surging piracy endangered intercontinental shipping.

That's a wonderfull solution to anarchy, suspend the rule of law! What a brilliant idea! [/sarcasm]

You know I'm all for giving the pirates a fair trial and then hanging their asses. This is no different than terrorist attacks where the principle of the rule of law is what is at stake here. As we've learned from the debacle with Guantanimo we create more problems when we suspend the rule of law. So that's not a viable option.

Hanging would be an unbelievable atrocity.

One way to help this situation would be to recognize Somaliland and Puntland and use them to help stabilize the south, rather than pretend we can do everything and not recognize functioning government where we need to.

I wonder how long it takes to learn to speak in Pirate if your original language is Somalian?

I also wonder if penguins have knees...

Pirate language is alot easier to learn and speak than somalian, otherwise we'd have a national talk like a somalian day just like we have a national talk like a pirate day.
