It was a symbol used by racists and became associated with them. A similar thing happened with your hammer and scythe. Symbols, like words, mean whatever we say they mean. Maybe you can raise your voice to be heard above the racist's din and reclaim "pepe." Why you'd bother, idk.

The Confederate flag was the flag of a white supremacist slave regime. It is racist by definition. It is just like waving the flag of Rhodesia or apartheid South Africa.

A flag can not be inherently racist. Any meaning it has is placed upon it by us and how we use it.

It is certainly possible to reclaim those symbols for another cause, but why would you bother? I kind of see what Kanye was doing with the flag but a stupid green frog meme used by some impotent racists/internet trolls...
