It's not all his fault, since the White Supremacist Extremist (WSE) movements have been around for a while. After falling off after the 60s, they regained momentum in the late 70s. Not sure if there's a Vietnam connection there. A lot of social change came about inside the military due to Vietnam. As with other wars, those who survived brought back strongly felt ideas regarding their experiences. Things like life, death and the value of their own lives. Forward-thinking change often creates backlash. People are reluctant to change. WSEs are reluctant to change. Worse, they want to turn back the clock to a fantasy world that never existed...because they are dumbasses who don't understand history.

In Behaviorism, there are three main modes of behavioral modification; Positive reinforcement, negative reinforcement and punishment. Punishment produces the quickest, but shortest lasting results. In human beings, it also creates resentment. Positive reinforcement is the most lasting, but also requiring the most time to produce the desired results. Negative reinforcement is a good partner to Positive reinforcement. IMO, punishment should only be used in very serious situations, such as lethal or severe injuries being likely if not stopped. The punishment should be measure to achieve the desired results (quickly stopping the asshole) with a minimum of injury to all.
