In an interview on MSNBC, PBS Host Tavis Smiley said the 2012 presidential race is "going to be the ugliest, the nastiest, the most divisive, and the most racist in the history of this Republic."

I rather think that the Illinois US Senate election of 1858 between Lincoln and Douglas was a tad bit more racist. Same deal with the Presidential elections of 1860 and 1864. Then there was the 1948 Presidential election which featured Strom Thurmond. In the 1924 election, you had the issue of anti-lynching laws which the Harding and Coolidge administrations had been supporting. The Klan showed up at the DNC convention and made a big fuss about the direction the country was heading in.
