Is that the same post office whose operations receive no tax dollars but rely on the sale of stamps, packages, etc. for funding?

The post office is an independent agency of the federal government. I doubt you can tell me why it still exist that way despite no tax dollars being used for operations.

Rather than raising taxes it would be preferable to cut benefits that were not included in the original SS law but added later and would not hurt any beneficiary who retired at full retirement age. You could eliminate (or reduce) early retirement at 62 since about 70% of people retire early. Allowing a person of full retirement age (66) to collect full benefits while still working full-time with no penalty is another area. Allowing a person married to someone or more than one for 10 years to collect benefits from them. These are just a few areas that could be cut without actually hurting anyone depending on benefits during retirement. There are others, as well.

This piece is interesting, but there are a few glaring issues. Raising everyone's FICA rates would do the same thing that the article claims in the first paragraph...cause employers to cut wages/hours. Perhaps a little slower. What the article doesn't mention, is that that wealthiest among us do not contribute to FICA, as cap gains are not taxed the same as income.

Means testing would help, but then we're asking some people to contribute, without a payback.

The SS retirement is solvent. A big problem arises from the SS disability funding.

If we, as a society, have determined that it is in everybody's best interest (i.e. the "general welfare") to have a social safety net so that mass numbers of people aren't starving in the streets...

...and for elderly retired people not to have to live without an income and basic health care,

...and we elect officials who reflect that notion

...and those elected officials appoint judges who uphold the laws written by the officials we elect,

...then malcontents like yourself who don't like it, have the option to either a) shut the fuck up, quit your WHINING and PAY YOUR TAXES and learn to live with it - or - b) pack up your cheap-ass garage sale junk possessions in your broken down pickup truck, abandon the trailer, GET THE FUCK OUT OF MY COUNTRY and go live somewhere else that's more to your liking.

Douchecanoes like CFM enjoy berating those on public assistance (which, with the exception of social security disability, is nearly always temporary) and screeching about moochers and slackers and takers. I often get a sneaking suspicion that they themselves are on "welfare".... kind of hard to see how they could be here posting all day and still hold down a job, unless they're retired and receiving the biggest public assistance benefit of all -- social security.

It's like the homophobes who screech about the immoral and disgusting behavior of "those gays," then get caught with their pants down in the men's room at the airport.

At least SS and Medicare are supposed to be self financed - sure they're ponzi schemes but at least we know there's always future funding.
From my experience with military I'd estimate about half is a social welfare handout for those that know they can't get fired while collecting a paycheck.
