High School Teacher’s Lesson In Arabic Calligraphy Prompts Closure Of Entire School District

Schools in Augusta County Virginia will be closed on Friday after a calligraphy lesson prompted a disturbing anti-Muslim backlash.

The controversy started when a lesson in World Geography class asked students to try to copy an example of Arabic calligraphy. The phrase was a statement of Islamic faith but the students were “not asked to translate the statement or to recite it.” Rather, the purpose of the exercise was to give students an “idea of the artistic complexity of calligraphy.”

The class covered a variety of religions including Christianity, Judaism and Buddhism.

Some students refused to complete the assignments and several parents protested at a meeting earlier this week. Kimberly Herndon, the parent who organized the protest, called the lesson “indoctrination.”

“She gave up the Lord’s time. She gave it up and gave it to Mohammed,” Herndon said.

Other parents called for the teacher, Cheryl LaPorte, to be fired.

This prompted over-the-top national coverage from places like Fox News and the story quickly spread on social media.

The attention resulted in “voluminous phone calls and electronic mail locally and from outside the area” to the school district. A statement from Augusta County Public Schools said the decision to close the schools was based on the “tone and content” of the communications “based on the recommendations of law enforcement.”

The school district also announced that “a different, non-religious sample of Arabic calligraphy will be used in the future.”

Other students have rallied behind LaPorte, praising her skills as a teacher.

The attacks in Paris and San Bernardino has sparked anti-Muslim backlash throughout the U.S. ThinkProgress has documented that at least 46 anti-Islamic incidents, many of them violent, since the November 13 attacks in Paris.

religious hate

man what fucking tards

I cant wait until the republican party goes into full cardiac arrest

Seems the ones afraid are the liberals who run the schools, no longer are parents going to put up with the shit that comes out of teachers mouths any longer.

I don't think the teacher should be fired or disciplined but she probably should have chosen something else for them to write, like house or carrot or something less controversial than an affirmation of a faith

what was the phrase?

god is good?

guess how they spell god in Arabic?

It actually was talking about how there is no other god but Allah and that Mohammed is the true messenger. I'm sure if the statement was John 3:16 there would have been outrage from other groups. The easiest compromise is it not use an affirmation of faith to teach calligraphy.

they were learning the language of a certain culture or giving a hand at how hard Arabic letters are?

thinking this is a punishable offense gives you an idea why religions are not allowed be learned about in school

All I am saying is that the text should have been something basic and harmless like the word "horse". I personally would be disappointed if I were asked to write something out that I don't know how to translate and then learn it said something like that but at the same time my faith is strong and I know that I'd be ok. I don't think religion shouldn't be discussed in a classroom setting but I do think that the teacher should me mindful as to what they are teaching.

why is religion different from the other pursuits of man?

why teach math to everyone?

why teach science to everyone?

but not religion?

I wonder what the moronic lefties would be saying if the phrase was Christian and stated "God is great"

Oh yeah, then they would be ranting about how we need absolute separation of Church and State.

There are world religion electives in most colleges and even some high schools but not all. I would think it's hard to find someone qualified enough to speak on behalf of a lot of religions though which probably limits it's availability. My university requires Bible classes as part of my schedule but it's obviously a Christian school so it's understandable, but the high school I went to had a club for Christians where we talked about similar things. There wasn't a club for any of faith though since it was mostly all Christians but if someone wanted to create a club for Jews or Muslims or any other faith they probably could have.

Had they chosen some bible verse the leftardiots would be screaming SEPARATION OF CHURCH AND STATE

I guess the are one with the muslimes now. I hear Deshtard and Zipperhead are being fitted for their burkas as we speak. They having trouble finding enough material to cover Deshtards wide ass.

That depends on the context of the class but in most cases her choice of phrases to copy was inappropriate....and now she knows why it was inappropriate.

Agreed, unless it's some sort of comparative religion or philosophy class it would be inappropriate at a public school.

Because it can be divisive and we have a Constitutional wall of separation between government and religion in this nation.

Lighten up Francis. I don't care what religious credo it was, it was a relatively innocuous sin and anyone getting their panties in a wad about it really needs to either get a life or stop listening to Bill O'Reilly.

settle down sheep focker... I agree it wasn't a huge deal. I was mocking the stupidity of Zappa and desh. Their faux outrage about 'righties' getting worked up about this when both of those idiots would be going bonkers had it been related to Christianity is comical.
