Pandemic Preparedness

Guess who removed pandemic preparedness from the stimulus bill.

without question this was the right move. How much money have we wasted on these fear mongering stories in the past? OH MY OH MY ... it could flood in the Sahara.... we should prepare!!! Spend hundreds of millions building life boats and place them strategically throughout the desert. Worse case scenario it fucks with the minds of people who are dumb enough to get lost in the desert.

Yeah, we should never prepare for anything at all. Total waste of money.

And you wonder why libertarians are in the political wilderness.

By the way, the secessionist governor of Texas is now begging the feds for vaccines. When push comes to shove, people always turn to the left to fix the problems they've caused for themselves.

We should tell Texas - oh sorry? What? I'm sorry, can't do that. I thought under your ridiculous misinterpretation of the constitution that wasn't a federal power? After all, it says in the constitution "The federal government shall only do things conservatives like". It says nothing about general welfare, interstate commerce etc... that's absurd. So sorry. Looks like your gonna have to die. :(

Conservative justice... nothing sweet. Not even Aspartame.

yeah dumbass, because THAT is what I said???? I did not say that we should never prepare for anything. I said we should not continue to buy into the bullshit fearmongering that occurs every time something like SARS, avian flu, swine flu, fish flu, termite flu etc... comes along as they are equivalent to preparing for a flood in the Sahara. While yes, they COULD happen, the liklihood is minimal at best.... just like the avian flu, just like SARS etc...

If there is a valid threat, then we should prepare.

But the determination of the validity of the threat should be made by the CDC not CNN.

There was a huge deal made over the bird-flu too. That was not much of a real threat.

Do people realize that the US has been stockpiling Theraflu since the "Avian Flu epidemic" never materialized and we are well positioned if this actually did turn into a pandemic?

Tamiflu?

Yes and we need a scare or pandemic to use those stockpiles so more can be made at a nice profit and boost the economy.

One round of Tamiflu runs between $50 and $100

As news of the A/1H1N Swine Flu pandemic spreads so do the rumours and fear. One persistently reoccurring statement is that existing flu treatments Tamiflu and Ralenza (generic names: Oseltamivir and Zanamivir) are not effective against the newest strain of Swine Flu. These rumours are not true; Tamiflu and Ralenza (Oseltamivir and Zanamivir) are considered to be effective and viable Swine Flue treatments.

According to the CDC and WHO websites both Tamiflu and Ralenza (Oseltamivir and Zanamivir) can treat the A/1H1N Swine Flu strain. Both drugs are currently recommended as effective treatment options. What does not currently exist is a vaccine for the A/1H1N Swine Flu strain.

Swine Flu virus A/1H1N is a never before super flu that consists of 3 known swine flu strains, 3 known bird flu strains and a human flu virus. The combination of these strains makes the A/1H1N Swine Flu an unusual, but as of yet still treatable, strain of the flu.

The biggest reason for advanced preparations to be made, at least in my mind, is the speed at which a disease can spread in our modern world.

If I take my swine flu to a major airport and sneeze a few times, I am sending infection into thousands of locations around the world.

I think that is the biggest fear. By the time it truly is an epidemic, it is also a pandemic.
