russia is not a threat to american superiority. That phase of history is over. They dont have the economy for it. The threat will come from china.

You are not understanding Putin, or Russian militry -there are quite capable of tieing us down into another Cold War.
They are quite capable of putting together an invasion of a eastern European state should they desire it.

We need detente, but we need to do it with an understanding of what are commonly called "spheres of influence"
To be direct about it -it means carving up the world into our interests and there interests -and respecting each others.

Where they overlap,they need talks/negotiations/tendering to keep them from becoming hot spots.

Do this and we save a LOT of money and manpower, and still check Russian expansionism,
but allowing Russia to grow it;s influence and economy too.
win/win.

they are actually not really capable of it. Simply because of economics, which is how reagan did it before. If we were truly to have a cold war with them they would become a dependency of china. Which is why this method is better.

look how long the Cold War lasted. Do you have any idea of the size and scope of the Russian military? 2nd in size and force capability only to the USA
( which is a reason we need NATO as much as NATO needs us)

Sure Reagan eventually outspent them -but at what costs? If we want to MAGA, the last thing we need is feeding a Cold War in Europe.
Yes China is a long terms threat -at least to the Pacific,and maybe more -but if we are tied down in Europe,how do we do that Asian Pivot?

I tend to agree with that.

I didn't realize how 'small' a country Russia is population wise. They only have 146 million spread out over that huge land mass.

most of the population is in Europe, not asia. If energy prices go up again russia gets more revenue.
But even now they are a military superpower.

They are, but mostly because they have nuke capabilities and I don't think Putin is a madman.

Regarding energy prices: the frackers changed the game. Players like OPEC and Putin don't have the near monopoly like they did even 7-8 years ago, so it would interesting to see how that aspect will play out.
