Pakistan’s lawmakers toughen penalty for ‘honor’ killings

Despite objections from religious hard-liners, lawmakers Thursday took the first significant move to curb mounting numbers of “honor” killings in Pakistan, stiffening the penalties and closing a loophole that allowed such killers to go free.

Public outrage has been growing in Pakistan in the wake of a string of particularly gruesome slayings. More than 1,000 women were killed last year in so-called honor killings in Pakistan, often by fathers, brothers or husbands who believed the victims had tainted the family name by marrying the man of her choice — or even meeting or being seen sitting with a man. Those who carry out such killings are almost never punished. In accordance with a rigid interpretation of Shariah, Pakistan’s legal code since the 1990s has allowed families of victims to forgive the killer. Since the killers in these cases are usually close relatives, the family almost always forgives them.

The measure passed Thursday imposes a mandatory 25-year prison sentence for anyone convicted of killing in the name of honor and bans family members from forgiving them.

Only about a third of the 446 lawmakers attended the session, but debate was raucous, with the loudest opposition coming from hard-line Islamists...

Conservatives demanded that the Islamic Ideology Council, a body of conservative Muslim clerics, weigh in on the bill before the vote. Supporters flatly refused, saying the council routinely vetoes legislation aimed at protecting women. The council once ruled it was permissible for a man to “lightly” beat his wife, though recently it did say that honor killings are “un-Islamic.” In the end, a voice vote was held, with a strong “yes” vote and a low mumbling of those opposed.

Honor killings are rooted in traditions by which a family’s honor is bound up with a woman’s chastity. Such killings often are met with acceptance, even approval, by neighbors and relatives...

“The problem is societal behavior,” Mr. Khan said. “It has nothing to do with laws.”

The new law also requires a minimum 25-year sentence for rape convictions.

good news. I do know Pakistan has gone wild with these killings ( same as Afghanistan) -but moving society is a slow go.
The big news here is the Islamic Council was not allowed to weigh in with their interpretation.
It's a victory for modernity

They're finally going to prosecute this practice and all you can say is "barbarians"?

Do yourself a favor and remain ignorant of what they do to some of these poor women---girls in many instances. By the fathers and male siblings no less.

The fact they are 'finally' trying to put a stop to it only means they may be on the way to not deserving the label.

I'm 100% aware of what these M E N do to those poor women they think dishonored them. Testosterone and a patriarchal society run wild.

They've taken a step to ending this horrific practice. Correct me if I'm wrong but haven't cons been saying for ages that radical Islamic laws need to be changed?

I have highlighted the issue of honour killings on here a few times and have been met by a complete lack of interest by both right and left. I am glad that you are raising it, good for you.

There's plenty of testosterone in the NFL and they don't condone honor killings. It's a problem of culture and religion aka Islam.

There's plenty of domestic violence in the NFL also. Thankfully 99% of it doesn't involve murder.

I realize you fight in the feminist batallion of the SJW's lol, but not everything fits the narrative. Cultures that have been heavily Islamized tend to have a lot of honor killings and the like.

It's a religious/cultural issue. If the Europeans had any sense, they'd recognize that obvious reality before allowing millions of people in from similar cultures.

But to do so would be 'xenophobic', so there's that lol.

Read and memorize the 2nd paragraph. There will be a test. :D

In many Arab countries, the practice of honour killing dates back to pre-Islamic times when Arab settlers occupied a region adjacent to Sindh, known as Baluchistan (in Pakistan).[SUP]57[/SUP] These Arab settlers had patriarchal traditions such as live burials of newly born daughters. Such traditions trace back to the earliest historic times of Ancient Babylon, where the predominant view was that a woman's virginity belonged to her family.[SUP]58[/SUP]

There is no mention of honour killing in the Quran or Hadiths. Honour killing, in Islamic definitions, refers specifically to extra-legal punishment by the family against a woman, and is forbidden by the Sharia (Islamic law). Religious authorities disagree with extra punishments such as honour killing and prohibit it, so the practice of it is a cultural and not a religious issue. However, since Islam has influence over vast numbers of Muslims in many countries and from many cultures, some use Islam to justify honour killing even though there is no support for honour killing in Islam.

It doesn't matter what the penalty is if prosecutors never enforce it. I expect them to continue dragging their heels on this issue, so nothing will get done.

If you want to stop the ill treatment of women on the Indian sub-continent then disseminating videos like this can only help. Of course you could just bang on about Pussygate all day long instead!!
