OT: Tiger!

Sorry this should be on the sports board but I'm fired up to see Tiger tee it up in a couple of hours. Everything else aside I am a fan of Tiger the golfer and can't wait to see how much rust he has in his game, if any, today and this weekend (if he makes the cut).

I hope he misses the cut.

I think that's a pretty weird thing to hope for when you really think about it. I understand disliking Tiger and thinking he is a total scumbag and someone with whom you would never want to associate, but hoping for him to fail at his profession is weird.

I mean, it isn't very often that I hear people hoping a plumber really screws up his next toilet installation because he cheated on his wife.

LOL...but I don't have to see the plumber screw up on television. And it might be different if Tiger was needing to be successful...don't really know. But he doesn't need to win anymore, and if he does he's a pretty bad manager of success.

I root for good people to win in most sporting events, especially individual sporting events.

If that plumber was being followed by the media, even before his affair(s), was being sponsered by some major companies, and then tried a weak excuse like he was a sex addict; then yes, people just might.

Obviously, this hope that people fail professionally because of issues in their personal lives is exclusive to people that are celebrities. I just think it is weird that people hope for a person to fail professionally. I understand why people do it, I just think it's weird.

I also think it is weird that people are surprised that Tiger is returning to his chosen profession. It's another thing you don't see with adulterous plumbers:
"Will he ever install toilets again? When will he get back to replacing hot water heaters? "

What is your opinion of Tiger's excuse of being a sex addict??

I think you had this before anything with his wife came up. Tiger had many many fans but there were those that didn't like him because let's face it he wasn't mr. personality, threw tantrums on the course, kind of seemed like a robot at times etc. Individuals are obviously different than team sports but just as many don't like the New York Yankees or Notre Dame football there will always be those who root for the underdog and not the person or team on top.

If you're trying to say that a few nut jobs that never liked Tiger, before he was exposed, to the way people feel about his behavior now; then you have failed.

I didn't root against Tiger then like I will now. I also rooted for him when he was in contention with a foreigner on the last day....unless it was Ernie Els. Not any more. Admittedly I didn't like the cussing on the course, don't mind the robotic like performance...that's just focus, IMO. And yes, I root for the underdog....I was for Butler. :)

???

No, I'm responding to why someone would root for an individual to fail.

Obviously how people feel about Tiger now and whether they root for him is going to be different than pre Thanksgiving night.

There were plenty of people, who were not nut jobs, that didn't root for Tiger before all his cheating and I gave my explanation for why that was.

Part of the reason people root for athletes - especially in sports like golf & tennis - is likability factor.

While I think private lives are private & all that, the revelations from Tiger's whole scandal have lowered his likability factor in a huge way. Combine that with months of hearing questions from my kids about why people have affairs, and why when they do they have many of them at once, and I'm a Lefty fan all the way this weekend.

I, too, hope Tiger misses the cut...

I really hope nothing like this ever comes out against Lefty. He's my second favorite, right behind Kenny Perry.

You have now crossed the line Sir! They will finish the year 14-2 because even the almighty Pete can't beat the 49ers.

they will go 9-7 and he will cry about the playoff structure AGAIN!!! but alas seatle will declare them NFL champs.

You're always going to have people who hate. Just look at how many people wanted President Bush to fail, or even to drop dead.

When it comes to sports figures, I believe it's because people feel betrayed when a huge celeberty like Tiger acts so stupid.

Golf is a pussy sport, played by pussies. Not real men. Golf was invented so fat business men in suits could go outside and pretend they are athletes.

Golf would be emminantly more interesting and usefull to civilization, in general, if it was played in a mine field.

That's a somewhat narrow view, Mott. You're taking the traditional view that "manliness" (for lack of a better word) is defined by physicality & athelticism, though I would still argue that there is some of that in golf.

Toughness under pressure - a mental attribute - is tested in golf more than many sports, and certainly is tested for a greater duration than any other sport.
