PORTLAND, Ore. (KATU) – The 21-year-old who survived a stabbing on a Portland, Oregon, train last Friday issued a heartfelt message Wednesday morning, thanking the community for its support and reminding it to stand behind the two women he was protecting.
On Friday, May 26 Micah Fletcher joined Rick John Best, 53, and Taliesin Myrddin Namkai-Meche, 23, in trying to de-escalate a situation where a man was harassing two teenage girls, one of whom was wearing a hijab.
The man stabbed Fletcher, Namkai-Meche, and Best before running from the train; he was later arrested by Portland Police.
Best and Namkai-Meche passed away from their stab wounds.
Fletcher was seriously injured, and has since been released from the hospital. He posted a video response Wednesday morning, thanking everyone who has offered support and words of encouragement.
In spite of the tragic loss of life, he also asked people to not lose focus on the two girls who experienced hate speech from a complete stranger.
“The girl who had the misfortune that day to experience what happened on that MAX, her life is never going to be the same. I want you to imagine that for a second - being that little girl, this man screaming at you, his face a pile of knives,” Micah said. “Three strangers come to your aid. They try to help you, and that pile of knives just throws itself.”
“Yes, two men died. Yes, I was injured,” he continued. “But what we need to remember is that this is about those little girls.”
He ended with a plea to help the girls who are also victims in this tragedy. He posted a link to a GoFundMe.com account offering them support.
“Just remember that they got hurt too. And when it comes down to it, when a kid is hurt like that we as a society, as a world, have a moral obligation do help.”
