The United States is a sovereign nation. The EU and Alabama are not.

I do not believe there is a clear answer to tge question. I don't know if anyone else is discussing this or not, that does not matter to me. The lines are being blurred as some powers of government are going global.

If I travel to France then want to drive to Italy, they don't check my passport at the border, there is no longer even a gate or guard. Maybe a sign that says welcome to Italy, much like driving from New Hampshire to Vermont!

While I agree it has come to mean something entirely different, the term "The United States" itself means a united conglomeration of states. States being seperate political units or nations.
