Oklahoma teacher protest

"Thanks for saying this. My youngest is a teacher, with a masters in special ed/minor in early childhood special ed. She makes $40K/year, after 8 years of teaching."

because why?

because the people have been underpaid to create this new NORMAL HUH

Because employees are not getting raises to keep up with inflation. If you keep the same rate of pay, you are actually getting a pay cut. Unions used to have the power to allow employees to get raises and COLA.

in what places can a person live an unimpoverished life on 40 K

A single person in most of the middle of the country (my daughter lives near STL) could do well and afford to buy a house on $40K/year. The cost of living there is low, especially compared to California. Average price per square foot for a home in her area is $100-$125.

A family with children and only one income would do poorly on that same salary.

Again a non-sequitur. States like MA with high median incomes for Educators don't seem to have a problem finding and retaining top talent for their public schools. Same here in Ohio in communities like mine where we pay well above the median.

Maybe we should talk about where money is really wasted in public education like lack of over sight in spending by local school boards. Bloated and unchecked bureaucracy, inconsistent contracting processes, toothless internal auditing systems, inefficient, obsolete and often excessive operations costs, excessive numbers of administrators with excessive pay at the cost of classroom instruction, high administrative and operations spending as a percentage of total spending, poor budgeting and board governance.

Now teachers salaries and benefits are the largest single cost but instructional services are what schools are there to perform and those instructional costs (mostly teachers salaries and benefits) are often negatively impacted by the issues I just described. Maybe it's these issues that need to be scrutinized and not greedy teachers unions.

If everything I'm saying is a non-sequitur then I don't know what you are arguing. Teachers are paid based on their years of service. Private industry doesn't do that. The best teacher makes the same as the worst teacher if they have worked the same number of years. Private industry doesn't do that. There is no economic incentive for top people to become educators.

It is a low cost-of-living area so it's not too bad overall. But if she lived in Chicago, for instance, that $40K/year wouldn't go nearly as far.

This contains so much truth that I think needs to be addressed. Where a person chooses to teach should have a bearing on what they make. Where I teach, for instance, I think we should make somewhat less than someone who teaches in an inner city Oklahoma City school. I have thought that all my career. Many do not agree but consider ... the cost of living is higher in OKC and discipline is much more of a problem. I still paddle kids for their bad behavior, for heaven’s sake ... AND ... most of my kids will then get one at home if I give them one here. It’s April and I haven’t paddled one kid all year. And that’s typical for this school. BTW, I teach grades 7-12.

I met her at A.A. We both had over ten years sobriety, I have been sober since 1982. Eat shit, asshole.

That's terrible, you falling off the wagon like that after she agreed to take you in. No wonder she left you.

The only thing we might disagree on is how to determine who is the best teacher. I do agree that those who show growth deserve compensation suitable to that growth, but how to determine if that growth is happening is sometimes a very hard thing to do.
