Ohio's top GOP supporter quits party

As Trump Governs For His Base, The Republican Party Is Shrinking
Tossing his base almost nothing but red meat and constant divisive rhetoric isn’t just driving wedges between Republicans, it’s making them leave the party.

... there’s a catch to this overwhelming support from Republican voters. One of the biggest reasons why it’s so high is because the party itself has been shrinking to Trump’s most loyal and devoted followers. Rather than commanding the close to unanimous support of half the nation, his base accounts for slightly more than one-fifth of the electorate. Other presidents who saw similar displays of absolute devotion from a shrinking number of voters? Nixon as Watergate was reaching a fever pitch, and George W. Bush towards the end of his second term as the Great Recession was revving up. However, the situation with Trump is even worse. Nixon and Bush The Lesser merely lost the party’s support. Trump is actively making it smaller and more extreme.

Meanwhile, in the 28 states allowing voters to specify a party preference, Democrats have an 11% lead on Republicans and a higher self-affiliation percentage. It’s not exactly that the party has grown but that it held steady and is seeing booming support from Millennials, who will soon be the largest voting bloc in the nation. At the same time, the number of independents, or voters who choose not to affiliate with a party, has surged. This is also good news for Democrats because even after adjusting for partisan preferences among independent voters, they still have a nearly 10% lead on the GOP. So in short, the Republican Party is whittling itself down to The Party of Trump while the Democratic Party is holding steady and seeing more interest among undecided and swing voters.

Brookings Institute: Trump owns a shrinking Republican party

A political party that can’t attract young people, especially in a generation that is as big as the Millennial generation—America’s largest demographic group—is not a party with a very bright future. So although Trump, while focusing on the base, has made the Republican Party his, come November it may not be as much of an advantage.

Great strategy.

I am going to assume with that comment that you don't understand the establishment side of the GOP.

This doesn't have anything to do with Trump specifically.

There are other members of the GOP who are not establishment.

Trump was elected by Republicans because he was not establishment and the Republican voters rejected the establishment types like Kasich, Bush, and Rubio.

Such as? :cof1:

what Crow is trying to get at in its own clumsy way is that there is a type of Republican that needs to be cut out from the party even if that means they go over to the Democrats. Republicans who value free trade above all and prioritize the needs of international organizations over the needs of the US. I get that politics is about adding to your base however there comes a time where a portion of your base has wants that are incompatible with the wants of the others so a reorganization is needed.

How does a Governor or state representatives control free trade in America? Can you tell us what candidates Wexner has backed so as to support your above claim?

There's something off about this story. I've lived in Ohio for 30 years, and I've never heard of this guy. Furthermore, what kind of a Republican heaps praise on Obama? I call B.S.:bs:

You've never heard of Les Wexner? The guy founded The Limited. Their first store was in Upper Arlington (where my folks went to high school). Guy is one of the top CEO's in the world. He gave us Victoria's Secret! (god bless him). Dude is an tOSU grad and has donated tens of millions to the University. He's donated millions to groups in Columbus. And he's been a big donor to the state and national Republican Party.

This is a big loss and it's not draining any swamp.

Why would any self respecting Republican praise a snake like Obama?

It's probably why he says he's no longer a Republican. It's not like the party is going to die because he left but he spent a lot of money on the party statewide and that loss will definitely hurt
