Ohio Car Dealers: "Competition BAD...Socialism GOOD!"

Tesla cars so easy to buy online, Ohio auto dealers want a law to shut them out

The American automaker sells its electric vehicles directly to customers, ensuring each buyer receives the same cost no matter where they buy their Tesla car.

“You can do everything on your computer — it’s so much easier,” Sunjay Kumar told The (Cleveland) Plain Dealer. “You really can’t negotiate anything, so it takes the headache out of that.”

That business model poses a direct threat to dealers who sell other vehicle brands.

They’re backing Senate Bill 260, sponsored by Sen. Tom Patton (R), which would explicitly prohibit the state from issuing dealer licenses to manufacturers – including Tesla.

They argue that Ohio’s Bureau of Motor Vehicles violated a rule requiring dealerships to have a contract with a car manufacturer when it allowed Tesla to sell vehicles in the state.

“We think everybody ought to be held to the same standard,” said Tim Doran, president of the Ohio Automobile Dealers Association. “We thought that was the policy that was agreed to for more than a couple decades and the BMV, frankly, out of the blue, went 180 degrees out of their policy — that’s why we’re here.”

The California-based manufacturer has showrooms in Cincinnati and Columbus, with another in Cleveland placed on hold while the company fights the legislative challenge to its business model.

He argues the Senate bill places the state’s 830 dealers on competitive footing with Tesla and other manufacturers.

Doran said Ohio dealers are heavily invested in their showrooms and employ more than 50,000 workers statewide.

The trade organization contributed more than $100,000 to Ohio state lawmakers last year, according to campaign finance records.

A spokesman for Tesla Motors told The Plain Dealer that the manufacturer sold just 300 of its vehicles – which cost about $70,000 or more – last year in Ohio and makes about 20,000 vehicles a year, compared to 15 million to 17 million gas-powered cars.

Tesla spokesman James Chen said competition among dealers is already protected by Ohio franchise laws, but those exclude companies such as Tesla that don’t offer franchises.

“They want to protect their monopoly,” Chen said. “If there’s one crack in the door — the argument they’ve put forth is other manufacturers could do the same thing.”

While I oppose these types of actions, I don't have a problem with a state doing it. In the truest firm if Federalism another state will step up.

But whoever said Republiacans can't be guilty of crony capitalism. You sure aren't against which is why you are silent when libbies do it

Spare me your feigned indignation. Just more Big Indian/Little Indian games

Did you both miss this part ?

and what the hell does this have to do with left wing socialism ?

Specific protections that make things more expensive for the consumer and keep the buggy whip companies in business are not socialistic, they're fascistic. A new business model allowing the people to deal directly with the manufacturer may not be a bad thing, but trying to make it illegal is a step in the wrong direction.

By the same token, the regulations already exist .... and US car dealers must obey that regulation, why not everyone....

I would probably classify it as crony capitalism.

Sure! As long as it's a State that supports crony Capitalism you are ok with it even after openly stating you aren't ok with the concept............

Maybe you should think for yourself instead of letting your State think for you.

By the same token, the regulations already exist .... and US car dealers must obey that regulation, why not everyone....

Well you either "obey law" or you think for yourself and fight to make new law that isn't stupid. You tend to support anything state. Some support anything Left. Some support anything Right. Some support anything "less Government"........I support what my brain thinks is the right thing to support...

I would probably classify it as crony capitalism.

This has been ILA's only educated post EVER..

It's not Socialism, it's crony capitalism. Corporations putting money in the pocket of Government officials to ensure they profit.

While the wild Right knows about "Crony Capitalism' their stance is "no more government!" instead of figuring out why our government is so out of control (citizens united). Their stance is like seeing a car with a flat tire and trashing the entire car instead of using their brain to fix the flat tire.

You don't understand do you? I oppose lots of things personally, but if States want to implement them, they should he able to.

I think this idea is stupid.

But, I also am not naive enough to think that there won't be businesses who always try to use gobblement to give themselves a competitive advantage.. If things like this are kept local, there is a less likelihood of it happening,

That is what the a founders envisioned.

Maybe if you would pull your condescending head out of your ass once in a while and try to understand what someone types you wouldn't be embarrassed all of the time

I haven't bought a new car in 20 years. Literally.

It has nothing to do with the cost, but everything to do with the fact that car salesmen are just one or two steps above child molesters on the scale of human debris.

Frankly, it's long overdue that manufacturers take some control over this gaping flaw in their marketing. All the welcoming, family friendly, television commercials in the world amount to nothing when one has to enter the showroom and come face-to-face with some slick, greasy, pencil-moustached, sharkskin suited, new car salesmen ... sizing you up to see how much he can screw you over.

This isn't socialism Zap. It's monopoly capitalism and could possibly be in violation of federal anti-trust laws. It is obvious that the dealerships are attempting to enact legislation that would limit competition and hurt consumers.

By the same token, the regulations already exist .... and US car dealers must obey that regulation, why not everyone....

The regulations exist for the Buggy Whip companies, this company has removed that part from the equation. They are upset because they see the writing on the wall. If car manufacturers all decide to skip the dealership and be more directly involved with customers these buggy whip makers will lose their job. If we thought this way in the time when cars were just beginning, we'd all be forced to buy a whip with our automobile because everybody had to in the past and buggy whip manufacturers would be sitting pretty... We'd all have a whip we didn't need, but they'd be protected.

The limits of contemporary liberalism - its gross, predatory deficiencies - are astounding. Business tries to protect themselves from an evolving market, and liberals are surprised. They call it socialism. They call it isolated corruption that must be stopped.

Wrong again dunce; the dealers just want Ohio to enforce the same regulations with Tesla as they have on other dealers. Learn to read before you emote.

Jeebus...sure you didn't just pull a muscle contorting yourself like that?

I understand how uncomfortable it makes you to agree with someone you despise so completely, but my God, at least do a few stretches next time so you don't strain any of the important muscles of the body.

My mistake...thanks for setting me straight.

I may have been wrong about WHAT it was, but no matter what you call it, what the auto dealers in Ohio are trying to do is WRONG.

Once upon a time a long time ago I worked on a car lot, for about 3 weeks. In that time I saw car salesmen engage in so much antisocial behavior. 3 guys were dealing drugs under the guise of test drives, one car salesmen took a young woman for a test drive, gave her directions where to drive and took her to his house where he made such inappropriate remarks and suggestions she WALKED 5 miles back to the lot. Salesmen would talk all the time about how they raped someone on the price of the car, how they lied to older people about the need for extended warranties, etc. I made fairly good money for those three weeks but could not resort to the tactics that made some of those guys tons of money,
