Jennifer Rourke said she was attacked after speaking at the state house in Providence. Officer Jeann Lugo is under criminal investigation.

An off-duty Rhode Island police officer who was running for state Senate is under investigation for allegedly attacking his female opponent during an abortion rights protest Friday night.

Jennifer Rourke, who is running for the state's 29th District, said she had finished speaking at a rally outside the state house in Providence when she was attacked by officer Jeann Lugo.

Lugo, who has been with the department for three years, briefly addressed the incident on Twitter. "I will not be running for any office this fall," he posted. He was running for District 29 as a Republican.

The video appears to show a man throwing two punches at a woman, hitting her once in the head. A campaign spokesperson told CNBC that Rourke went to the hospital for a CT scan.
 
Off-duty Rhode Island police officer suspended for allegedly punching woman at abortion protest

The Providence Police Department confirmed Saturday that Jeann Lugo, who was also vying for the Republican nomination for the same state Senate seat, was the officer in question.

"The PPD is criminally investigating the behavior of an off duty officer last evening during a protest where a female was assaulted," the department said earlier Saturday. "The officer has served for 3 yrs and placed on administrative leave w/pay this morning, pending a criminal investigation and administrative review."

Lugo told the Providence Journal that he was "not going to deny" the punching allegation, but added that "everything happened very fast."

Then some idiot jumps the dude leaving from the other side and punches Him couple of times


And for no sane reason the bearded cop punches the woman in red at least twice

He just destroyed his life

He punched a much smaller than him female after watching her help escort his friend to safety



And that asshole was an Arizona cop for three years

There is a video of these guys walking away talking to each other after too
