Off-duty Alaska Air pilot tries to shut off engines on Everett flight, airline says

Everett attempted to shut down the engines in-flight and had to be subdued, according to audio captured of the incident and statements from the airline and authorities.

Horizon Air flight 2059, an Embraer E175 regional jet from Everett to San Francisco, diverted to Portland, where it landed safely. The Alaska Airlines pilot, who was riding in a jump seat on the flight deck, was arrested and jailed on suspicion of attempted murder and other crimes.

Multnomah County Sheriff’s Office records show Alaska Airlines pilot Joseph Emerson, 44, was arrested by Port of Portland police and was booked into jail just after 4 a.m. Monday. Emerson is expected to be arraigned Tuesday in Portland.

Emerson, a California resident with ties to Seattle, has been a commercial airline pilot since 2001 and has flown with Alaska since 2016.

While law enforcement authorities have yet to say what they believe occurred aboard the flight, radio communications between the Horizon flight crew and air traffic control provided some insight.

In an audio recording of the exchange, one crew member briefed an air traffic controller on the situation after the immediate threat was dealt with.....

“I’ll just give you a heads-up. We’ve got the guy that tried to shut the engines down out of the cockpit,” the crew member told Portland air traffic control in a calm voice. “It doesn’t seem like he’s causing any issue at the back. I think he’s subdued.”

“We want law enforcement as soon as we get on the ground and parked,” he added.

:whoa:

This nut bag tried to kill 83 people by trying to shut down the engines. He lives in San Francisco. On social media he hates Trump. He likes Democrats. Glad his crazy plan failed. You don't expect the pilots to try to kill you. He tried to pull the fire alarm suppression system. I wonder if he was just trying to open the door?

Andreas Lubitz crashed the Germanwings plane into the Alps in March 2015, killing 150 people. The captain tried to break open the door with an axe pleaded with the co-pilot to open the door.

Airliners have very shitty glide capabilities.

I realize that fuel is expensive,
but nine times out of ten,
your best bet is to leave the engines running.

I'm guessing suicide. But wanted to make it look like an accident for family insurance purposes.

"MEMPHIS, APRIL 7 (1994) -- An off-duty Federal Express pilot armed with two claw hammers, a knife and a spear gun attacked the crew of a company cargo jet in midair today, critically injuring three people including himself.

Auburn Calloway, 42, was a passenger on FedEx Flight 705, when he burst into the cockpit of the DC-10 and attacked the plane's pilot, co-pilot and engineer about 50 miles west of Memphis, authorities said.

A bloody struggle ensued before the crew was able to overpower the man, who has worked for Federal Express since 1989."

This was a cargo jet and the off duty officer was hitching a ride.

I saw this on a tv show called "air disasters" and "May Day" that does 1 hour recreations of events and the investigations. The fight was brutal and lasted about 20 minutes.

They also covered the Andreas Lubitz murder suicide that Serendipity mentioned.

So this was political? ROTFLMFAO!!!!! I was wondering which idiot would somehow try to turn this into a political football. Fake Doc is the designated idiot on this one. He never disappoints.

So this liberal pilot took magic mushroom before he got on the plane in the cockpit . Magic mushrooms almost killed 83 innocent people.Maybe the liberal West coast shouldn't have made magic mushrooms legal.

So the real Uber Eats driver[ doesn't realize this near catastrophe and lost of 83 innocent lives was because of the legalization of magic mushrooms.

I think there is more to this story.

According to google, shrooms last 4-6 hours. This guy says the took them 48 before the flight. They are also difficult to test for as they leave the system very fast.

I'm going to guess he is financially insolvent with tons of debt. The shrooms are just a ploy for a possible defense.

Looks like he was an HCQ abuser who used too many Ivermectin suppositories and he wanted to murder all those Westcoast liberals in the back.

I'm guessing he was suicidal for whatever reason. This wasn't political. The aforementioned incident on FedEx was an employee who was being terminated.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Federal_Express_Flight_705
On April 7, 1994, Federal Express Flight 705, a McDonnell Douglas DC-10-30 cargo jet carrying electronics equipment across the United States from Memphis, Tennessee, to San Jose, California, was the subject of a hijack attempt by Auburn R. Calloway, a Federal Express employee facing possible dismissal at a hearing scheduled for the following day for having lied about his flight hours.[3] He boarded the scheduled flight as a deadhead passenger carrying a guitar case concealing several hammers and a speargun. He tried to switch off the aircraft's cockpit voice recorder (CVR) before takeoff. Once airborne, he attempted to kill the crew with hammers so their injuries would appear consistent with an accident rather than a hijacking. The CVR, however, was switched back on by the flight engineer, believing that he had neglected to turn it on.

Calloway intended to use the speargun as a last resort. He planned to crash the aircraft hoping that he would appear to be an employee killed in an accident. He sought to let his family collect on a $2.5 million life insurance policy provided by Federal Express.[

I suspect that airline practices to catch mental health problems of pilots is failing just as almost everything else in America is failing.
