A faulty report on new jobless claims, driven by computer troubles in two states, ignited criticism of the Labor Department and spurred calls for it to overhaul a closely watched economic report.
The number of U.S. workers applying for jobless benefits tumbled by 31,000 to a seasonally adjusted 292,000 in the week ended Sept. 7, the lowest level since April 2006, the department said Thursday.
Weekly declines of that size are rare, occurring twice a year on average since the data series began in 1967.
