Obama's handling of the oil spill: numerous delays

do not forget, obama said he, not bp, has been calling the shots since day one

___________

NEW ORLEANS – BP and the Obama administration face mounting complaints that they are ignoring foreign offers of equipment and making little use of the fishing boats and volunteers available to help clean up what may now be the biggest spill ever in the Gulf of Mexico.

The Coast Guard said there have been 107 offers of help from 44 nations, ranging from technical advice to skimmer boats and booms. But many of those offers are weeks old, and only a small number have been accepted, with the vast majority still under review, according to a list kept by the State Department.

And in recent days and weeks, for reasons BP has never explained, many fishing boats hired for the cleanup have done a lot of waiting around.

A report prepared by investigators with the House Committee on Oversight and Government Reform for Rep. Darrell Issa, R-Calif., detailed one case in which the Dutch government offered April 30 to provide four oil skimmers that collectively could process more than 6 million gallons of oily water a day. It took seven weeks for the U.S. to approve the offer.

White House spokesman Robert Gibbs on Thursday scorned the idea that "somehow it took the command 70 days to accept international help."

"That is a myth," he declared, "that has been debunked literally hundreds of times."

He said 24 foreign vessels were operating in the Gulf before this week. He did not specifically address the Dutch vessels.

gibbs apparently is a liar

i wonder what excuses obama apologists will come up with now....watch the spin

Oh, origional post, yes I read it. I belive that offers of aid have various reasons for being approved or denied or delayed. I do not belive that they are just being randomly ignored.

Just because an offer of help has been extended does not mean it should be accepted.

If Al QUeda offered to send some ships into the harbor to "lend assistance" should we accept?

Is BP paying this Yurt to obfuscate?

"The tools of ignorance at FAUX News blame the president for the oil spill, not BP. The tools conveniently ignore that it was two Texas oil men, George W. Bush and Dick Cheney (of secret Energy Commission fame) who deregulated Big Oil and stacked the Minerals Management Services with their industry cronies to green-light more off-shore oil drilling in ever deeper water. While demanding that "Barack the magic Negro" (Rush Limbaugh) use his "magical powers" to stop the leak, the tools of ignorance at FAUX News continue to preach deregulation and an unfettered free market for "drill, baby, drill" for Big Oil.

The Minnesota Loon, Rep. Michele Bachmann, has emerged as BP's chief defender. She worries about poor BP being "fleeced" by the president. You read that right. BP should not have to pay for the damage it has caused, despite its public promises to do so. Oh no, you the American taxpayer are once again going to be asked to pay for another company "too big to fail" -- it is you who should be fleeced. Republicans vs. making BP pay:

Leading off the crazy was Michele Bachmann, who called the escrow fund a "redistribution of wealth fund." She told Dave Weigel that she worried that BP was being "fleeced" by the Obama administration.

Now today, Rep. Joe Barton (R-TX) unbelievably apologized to BP's Tony Hayward, saying that he is "ashamed" how America has treated BP. If a Democrat did this, FAUX News would be running screaming chyrons across the screen accusing the Tory traitor of treason against his country and demanding his prosecution."

Once again, the Obama Administration is doing a very poor job with PR and marketing its efforts to the American people, but that is not what matters to me.

WHile the Republicans appologise to BP and Fox News blames the government for not enforcing its rules strictly enough.

"Only Republicans would spend money putting together an attack ad that uses repeated footage of their favorite sport, and their own last President W's greatest lack-of-response failure (Hurricane Katrina) against their enemy. It takes a special kind of gall, and it's quite effective--as effective as ex-Governor Sarah Palin's blaming environmentalists for the BP Oil Spill.

Fact is, President Obama and the US could plug all such holes--by banning offshore drilling again. But that's something Republicans wouldn't even consider. In fact, even now, they're pushing for more drilling.

Hypocrisy, anyone? This ad treats this serious tragedy like a football game or chess match, with points to be won merely by staying on the offense.

Fact is, it wouldn't be plugged for some time even if President Obama and the US did take control. Why? Because no one knows what they're doing. It's all a vast, dangerous, irresponsible experiment..."

Republicans have learned from Rove, take the most outragous position, take the one thing you are most culpable for and go out attacking your opponent over it.

If you are doing a shitty job on education, name it something like "no child left behind".

If you are up when you should be down, rename "up" down and you will win.

Its about staying on the offensive and never defending. Reality does not matter one inch.

so you blindly believe any thing the admin says and will blindly make up any excuse, no matter how far fetched to ignore the FACT that the admin has in fact delayed clean up in the gulf by weeks....7 weeks to approve certain dutch help....there is no excuse for that....there is no excuse to have have the "majority" (per the coast guard) of foreign help not approved yet...

keep spinning jarod...when bush was just DAYS late, he was bad, bad man...obama is WEEKS late, but he a good, good man and has his reasons

WHile the Republicans appologise to BP and Fox News blames the government for not enforcing its rules strictly enough.

jarod....why do you lie so frequently? ONE fucking republican apologized and the rest of the gop hounded him and made him recant and the completely distanced themselves from his comment

Does this mean that Bachmann isn't fucking, or that she isn't a Republican? Or does it mean you can't count?

"I'm ashamed of what happened in the White House yesterday," Barton told Hayward at the hearing. Barton was condemning a $20 billion escrow account funded by BP to help pay damages from the spill. President Obama and his administration negotiated the relief fund with BP. Barton called the fund a "shakedown" of the company by the Obama administration."

"Other Republicans echoed this apology. Rep. Michele Bachmann (R-Minn.) said that BP shouldn't agree to be "fleeced." The Republican Study Committee, with its 114 members in the U.S. House of Representatives, called the Gulf relief fund a "shakedown" of BP."

bachman didn't apologize to BP....according to what you posted, jarod said apologize....perhaps you need remedial reading lessons

any more lies you want to share?

"Addressing BP chief executive Tony Hayward, the ranking member on the House Energy and Commerce Committee, Rep. Joe Barton (R-Texas), said, "I'm ashamed of what happened in the White House yesterday. I think it is a tragedy of the first proportion that a private company would be subjected to what I would characterize as a shakedown -- in this case a $20 billion shakedown."

"By late Thursday afternoon, Barton had issued a second apology -- this time to those who had "misconstrued" his remarks."

"Rep. Michele Bachmann (R-Minn.) called the fund "a redistribution of wealth..."

"Rep. Michele Bachmann (R-Minn.) said that BP shouldn't agree to be "fleeced."
