Obama's First Tax Hike

Nope and you can eat home prepared not so healthy meals cheaper than that.
Chicken noodle soup .35 per serving. Crackers about .25. glass of milk maybe .35.
Grilled cheese sandwitch maybe .30.

We are talking lunch now aren't we?
Or is mcdonalds a main meal place for you?

I gave up fast food years ago. Im talking about dinner for these kids. like meat and veggies.

I make a pot of Chili or veggie soup that will feed a family of four for several meals for less than $15.

There are lots of things like this one can prepare for much less (or at least comparable to) than what fast food costs. Pot pies, chicken with anything, even roast and the fixins.

How many people on here eat brown beans anymore? Very healthy and very cheap.

OHH yeah brown (soup) beans, cornbread , some onions and perhaps some pickled corn!
And if you want to get fancy some fried taters and a fried pork tenderloin on the side.

Darn getting hungry now, have to go check and see what my cook is cooking up.

It makes far more sense. As they quit there will be less people who need the assistance plus they pay for themselves.

Linking something this important to an item you are limiting in every way possible other than just making it illegal and you are trying to get every person who does it to quit...

Kinda stupid.

we are getting down to the die hard smokers now, but with the new smokers being recruited by the tobacco companies maybe enough will replace those that die off/quit

i think a dedicated tax is a good start though - if enough quit, then they will have to find another revenue source...sort of a back door deal, now that they have it they can continue it...by pointing out the good it does

to pretend Obama is not hiking taxes on poor people is juvenille by democrats.
Just man/woman up and say "hey fuckwad what president keeps all there promises".

Where has he increased taxes on poor people?

I was going to comment on this being a tax increase on the poor but it appears Topspin beat me to it. President Obama broke his promise about not raising taxes on the poor even before he raised taxes on the rich. I hope this is not an indication of things to come.

Can the poor afford him?

I agree. Cigarettes need to be made as cheap as possible so that poor people smoke more. The more poor people smoke, the sooner they will die. The sooner poor people die, the less we have to pay for medicaid. The more tax cuts we can have for people who matter.

Cheaper cigarettes now!

To my notion a tax should affect consumers mostly (another reason I liked Huckabee), with maybe an exemption for groceries and in some cases, automobiles. If something igested (not food) is known to be harmful but not necessary then tax it heavily. Tobacco, Alcohol, any drugs that eventually get legalized, etc. all fall into this category for me. Tax them heavily and then use the money to do some good.....which is another area of concern for me. The government has shown itself not to be the best stewards of our tax dollars.

which is exactly the reason there shouldn't be 'sin' taxes, as you suggest. Remember, the power to tax is the power to destroy.

If we are to function as a nation then there has to be taxation......for things like roads and schools and such. (there's more but you get the point) I do feel the govt. is inept as stewards but they are the only govt. we have. Taxes have to come from somewhere.....I favor consumer taxes and "sin" (if you must call them that) taxes.

not arguing about having to have taxes. it's wrong to tax items unfairly as 'sin' taxes just because people think they are 'bad'.

Yes but they have been politically safe for many years now.

Remember the stripper pole tax Texas was proposing?
I wonder if that passed?

I would rather they tax cigarrettes and booze rather than groceries and medication.

absolutely. Do not tax the absolute essentials in life.

How about an entertainment tax? Ie a tax on tickets to entertainment events? Concerts, races? ball games, etc?
It is not essiential to life and if you can afford $45 for a concert another .50 will make no difference.

interesting to note that the stimulus bill contains 75 mil for smoking cessation though.

Yes uscitizen, I wouldn't see a problem with a little taxation in those areas either. I think the point is that there are lots of areas to tax without making it rougher on the poorer folks. And I don't mean to tax the middle class more either.....unless they smoke, drink or go to a lot of concerts and ballgames.

Yep, mostly those are getting money from those that do have discretionary dollars to spend.

BTW Leaning, my county just went no smoking in public buildings and businesses.
I am sort of on the outs with my fellow smokers because I am not yelling and screaming about it with them. I do not like it personally, but know it is a good thing overall.

It has been the same here for a while. I don't really care. I mostly only smoke on my porch at home. Not at work. I do smoke when I am outdoors at town though....trips to Walmart and such. At least here in OK we can smoke in parking lots and such. In AR you can't even smoke in the parking lot of clinics or hospitals. That's a bit much, IMO.

I completely agree with both you and Leaningright. Taxes on entertainment and stuff like that would be much better than taxing the things that you must have to live. The cigarette tax is like taxing beer because you know that the poor drink beer but not taxing Vermouth because the rich drink Martinis or taxing pork and beans but not taxing salmon.

Going to a football game is not a necessity of life. If I can't afford to pay the tax than I can't afford to go to the game. Eating is a necessity of life. Those pork and beans that are being taxed by Uncle Sam just might save my life.
