The federal government can do what ever it once so long as all 3 branches agree. The constitution provides a balance of power and requires everyone to do what is right, apart from that the federal governments powers are limitless if people arn't happy then vote for different people. The only limit on power of the federal government the people. We would have smaller government if the people really wanted it.

No only the right to pursue happiness but the government's roll is to PROMOTE the general Welfare and SECURE the blessings of liberty. They are to play an active roll.

ESTABLISH justice. INSURE tranquility. PROVIDE for the common defence.

Those are active verbs.

Ever see a town rip up perfectly suitable sidewalks and scrap perfectly functioning street lamps so they can spend hundreds of thousands of dollars on refurbishing Main Street yet they can't afford to pay for a room for the guy sleeping beside the dumpster in a back lane?

But discounting all that the reality is government medical or a single payer system or universal health care is less expensive than a "pay or suffer" system. It's been proven in every country with such systems, without exception. Not one single exception. In other words the most incompetent government is capable of running such a system.

Consider the absurdity of some lunatics saying Obama's plan is a job killer. The goal of an efficient health care system is to provide as few jobs as possible and still be able to get the job done. How does one reconcile providing jobs with cutting costs? It's ludicrous and it shows where ones priorities lie.

From computerized health records to finding homogeneous ways to deal with insurance companies these improvements will result in fewer jobs. YES! It is a job killer. It's supposed to be. What do those demented individuals think reforming health care is all about?

The goal is to get some of those hands out of the pockets of the ill.

So to be clear, you are in fact against Life, Liberty and the Pursuit of Happiness because you want all Non-essential money (an arbitrary term) to flow to the Federal government for acts of benevolence. Please stop trying to wrap yourself in the Flag when you are arguing against Founding principle.

Clearly you haven't been paying attention to the other Healthcare systems in the world. UK system is on the verge of total collapse, Sweden is privatizing and France is Cutting services, Japan is turning to Robots, Canadians Come to the US.

The founding fathers rarely agreed on anything. They all had different visions for this country and interpreted the constitution very differently. Adams and Jefferson ended up hating each other. Hamilton got killed in a duel.

The whole post where the UK's system is going under, etc. All the world is having a bit of a down turn, but I don't see any of these nations abandoning their systems to convert to something like ours! Their citizens would be out in the street if that happened protesting. In France they tried to raise the age and the people had a fit!
