Obama was Putin's puppet

Trump's decision to attack Syria came three-and-a-half years after President Barack Obama threatened Assad with military action after an earlier chemical weapons attack killed hundreds outside of Damascus. Obama had declared the use of such weapons a "red line." At the time, several American ships in the Mediterranean were poised to launch missiles, only for Obama to abruptly pull back after key U.S. ally Britain and the U.S. Congress balked at his plan.

He opted instead for the Russian-backed plan that was supposed to remove and eliminate Syria's chemical weapons stockpiles.

Obama chose to follow Russia's plan, but that is okay, perfectly normal to democrats.

Right?

Well to be fair to Obama, congress was not going authorize military action against Syria. It was iffy if the resolution would even pass the Democrat controlled senate, but the house was pretty much a goner with only a small number of solid supporters and many many who were strongly against it.

Trump himself said it would be a big mistake if he did not get congressional approval first. Not to mention his tweet a year earlier that read:

Now that Obama’s poll numbers are in tailspin – watch for him to launch a strike in Libya or Iran. He is desperate.
And Trump's poll numbers are in a tailspin.

Obama still had the authority to launch strikes against Syria and then 90 days to report.

Stop fantasizing about Putin riding you. How does Trump launching airstrikes that Russia does not approve of, make him Putin's puppet?

Come on Kenny, answer without resorting to a cartoon, pic or some link. Use your own words Kenny. You can do this. I know you can.

Sure, but he wanted congressional approval and the resolution restricted actions to 60 days and limited it to only air strikes. After the fiasco in Libya, why start another action without some cooperation?

The big question is where does Trump go from here? Tillerson has been talking pretty tough, saying he doesn't see a place for Assad running Syria and that steps are underway to remove Assad. That's regime change talk.

Tillerson and Haley both fucked up on Syria. Just a week ago they both made statements on the same day that removing Assad was no longer a focus of the US and that it was an internal matter for the Syrians. And what happens? Only a few days later he uses chemical weapons. You can take regime change of the table but you don't tell the war criminal that you're doing it, you keep him wondering.

You raise very good questions. I hate to fall back on my earlier point, but at this time, it is all I have. Maybe the chemical strike changed the Trump administration's position. Or maybe (as Grind would say) they played the long game and then when the chemical strikes happened, Trump had his wide open door to initiate strikes, 59 strikes.

Maybe they wanted to sound like they weren't that war hawkish and when the opportunity came, out come the tomahawks.

There's that, and one of the Tomahawks missed and landed square on the Russian theory lol.

So maybe the strike did have a political element.

Putin called it a significant blow to US/Russian relations.
I got Morning Joe on - McCain is a due guest after he finishes up with carnal knowledge with a gun in his dressing room..

THE RUSSIANS DID IT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! :)

Maybe they should let the old warhawk smoke a cigarette before he comes out lol.

I have mixed emotions about this business. On the one hand, it's good to have 'leading from the front back' [several world leaders back the strike]; also, using chemical weapons on civilians is a Red Line that Assad needs to respect. But any US military involvement in Syria is going to have consequences.

And not all of the consequences will be intended.

LOL. @ McCain

Ya. I suppose there are positives.
People like the POTUS as tough guy-chem weapons though considering the horrors of Syria- is a false red line.

At least it will tamp down the "Russian collusion" crap - i've given up on any detente now that Kushner's in a lead role..

And as with everything else Putin shits, you and the rest of the Trumpsky sheep swallow it down and ask for more.

This whole thing stinks of stage management.

Putin orders Assad to launch a chemical attack on civilians then allows Trump to respond with a missile attack supposedly "against Russia's wishes". Now Putin is telling the world he's upset with lil Donnie boy and all the morons like you guys are saying "See???? This means Trump is no Putin puppet!!!"

Suckers.

I meant Syria and not Iraq lol.

Trump was put into a hard place with the chemical strike: had he done nothing, then he's effectively continuing Obama's feckless policy in the region---that was what allowed Putin to have free reign in the region. And if he strikes Assad, it risks our already strained [thanks, democrats] relations with Russia.

Putin is a little pissy over it, but he does need stood up to. Trump and Tillerson will need to walk the tightrope on Russian relations here on out. It would benefit both countries if we're not at odds---which is fertile ground for some realpolitik diplomacy.

And you have to wonder what the North Koreans are thinking now that Trump has turned Mattis loose. Along a similar vein, Trump meets with the Chinese leader today in Key Mar-whatever it is in FL. China may be our only leverage on the insane little NK dictator.

Last nights strike could be Trump's first foreign policy mistake---or a stroke of brilliance. In either event, he rolled the dice.

OK..I find it weird Tomahawking an airstrip is some kina foreign policy victory -but I get the optics.

Good analysis
