Obama to seek new tax on oil in budget proposal

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - U.S. President Barack Obama will propose a $10-a-barrel fee on oil in his budget plan next week, as the White House seeks to boost the nation's investments in clean transportation projects, the White House said on Thursday.

The fee, which would be paid by oil companies, is likely to fall flat in the Republican-controlled Congress.

In the last year of his presidency, Obama has said the country must stop subsidizing the "dirty" fossil fuels of the past and focus on clean, renewable fuels that do not exacerbate climate change.

The problem is though that clean energy as it stands right now can't power the country as a primary energy source. Texas has massive wind farms to go along with all of its fossil fuels but it cant power the state. If you consider the country as a whole you can't try and push out the oil industry if you have nothing to truly replace it with. Also until cleaner types of energy are cheaper and easier to get and use for all of us it won't do much of anything to make the situation better. The government should also not be the ones to decide what energy is best to use. If solar power or wind power was able to compete with oil in some way and show that it can be a good thing to use for certain things then more people would probably buy into it, but for example right now gas powered cars are more affordable, more durable, and more useful than most electric or hybrid cars. If the solar companies and the car companies want that to change then they need to make the hybrid cars and the electric cars better and more affordable than the gas powered. My truck needs to haul heavy things and I also drive alot between college and my hometown and to rodeo events and things like that. I can't have an electric car that will die after 100 miles, and I can't pull horses with a prius.

You cant force technology to get better. Its making strides but for the most part our economy and our country still runs on fossil fuels. Taxing the source of that energy wont speed up cleaner technology it will just make everything expensive at the same time in my opinion.

you didnt even know the republicans defend these subsudies like their lifes blood huh.
