Obama thinks 'smart' guns will make us safer

Lumberjack

Come get some
President Barack Obama announced new steps Friday to help curb gun violence, including by identifying the requirements that "smart guns" would have to meet for law enforcement agencies to buy and use them as well as sharing mental health records with the federal background check system.

Smart guns use various technologies to prevent an accidental shooting or help track down a missing gun.

"These common-sense steps are not going to prevent every tragedy, but what if they prevented even one?" Obama wrote in a Facebook post. "We should be doing everything we can to save lives and spare families the pain and unimaginable loss too many Americans have endured."

As Obama unveiled a plan last January to expand federal background checks for gun purchases, he directed the Departments of Defense, Homeland Security and Justice to conduct or sponsor research into smart-gun technology. Obama also instructed the agencies to regularly review the availability of such technology and to promote its use.

I don't know much about these so called smart guns, but seems more of bluster than anything.

Why the heck does he need to expand background checks? How much wider does he want to cast the net?

My guess is that dumb users will still find ways to screw-up with smart guns. See smartphones for further reference...

LeoCat thinks all school children should be armed, that is just plain stupid. He called me a gun grabber for believing that.

I don't think Obama is saying he wants to take any guns here by the way.

Smart guns can help with accidental deaths, but I think they should be an option to the buyers and not an enforcement.

Common sense??? HAHAHA. Americans do far more more killing with cars than guns and yet the car makers are allowed to sell cars that do 2-3 times the legal speed limit and install internet access to distract drivers. There's your stupid. Leave guns alone until we go after cars.

I find it easier to text-and-drive safely than to text-and-shoot safely. I text-and-drive so much, I basically accomplish my commute with muscle-memory, anymore.

I'm not sure that this - sharing mental health records with the federal background check system - is legal or even a good idea.
