Official: Obama wants agency spending cut by $100M

By STEVEN R. HURST – 21 minutes ago

WASHINGTON (AP) — President Barack Obama convened his first formal Cabinet meeting, and the White House said he would challenge department and agency chiefs to look for ways to cut $100 million out of the federal budget.

Obama planned to remind the panel that American families are having to make tough financial decisions and need to know the government is spending their money wisely, too, a senior administration official said. The official discussed Topic A for the session on grounds of anonymity because it was to be behind closed doors.

A second senior official, also speaking anonymously, said Obama would point to cuts already being proposed.

The Veterans Affairs Department has canceled or delayed 26 conferences, saving nearly $17.8 million, he noted, and will be using less expensive alternatives, like video conferencing. The Agriculture Department is working to combine 1,500 employees from seven office locations into a single facility in 2011 - saving $62 million over a 15-year lease term. And the Homeland Security Department has estimated it can save up to $52 million over five years by purchasing office supplies in bulk.

The federal deficit for March alone was $192.3 billion, and $100 million would represent about one-twentieth of 1 percent of that. Obama has brought forward a $3.6 trillion budget for the 2010 fiscal year, beginning Oct. 1, a proposal that would produce $9.3 trillion in deficits over the next
decade.

:lmao:

How can anybody read this and not laugh at the stupidity of the whole idea. Another significant tough executive decision made by Zero.

Your Monday Message from the Libertarian Party:

Dear friend,

Did you hear? Obama’s cutting the budget!

Unfortunately, it’s only $100 million, which barely comes out to three percent of the $3.6 trillion in spending he is imposing on current and future taxpayers. Much of it is simply things like buying office supplies in bulk, or one-time cuts that do nothing to cure long-term spending problems.

And according to senior White House official, speaking to the Associated Press on the condition of anonymity, "said Obama will point to cuts already being proposed."

Obama’s budget calls for around $11,755.00 in spending for every man, woman and child in America. But his “cuts” -- which aren't even new reductions -- come out to only around 32.7 cents per person.

Yes, Obama believes that by cutting 32.7 cents off the price of an $11,755.00 financed purchase, he’s offering you a great deal.

You have to start somewhere and with something that everyone will get on board with, the rest follows.

You should encourage him to consult more Libertarians. Has Ron Paul had any discussion with him. I am not following the news as I should, lately. I have taken a mental break from it and am focusing on clearing clutter from my life!

It is amazing what can accumulate in two years!

I'd like to see him cut one thing. This is the same b.s. rhetoric Arnold used when he got elected, "i'm going to blow up boxes and eliminate government waste" etc. Arnold ended up doing nothing. Now Obama and Arnold are not the same person but while I appreciate the rhetoric and agree with it call me skeptical. Until I actually see some action taken I'm not falling for this talk again.

BTW, nothing against the actual information. I just am tired of Webbway attacking Obama simply because he's black.

yeah, there's enough to go after Obama on from a job performance perspective. Race shouldn't have anything to do with it. It's f*cked up.

while good that he is cutting some stuff, this is like the age old merchant trick of raising prices 50% and then advertising a 50% sale...and then telling you what a "good" deal you are getting...

God, $100 million is just like a speck of sand in a bucket. Sheeeesh!!

No, this is raising prices by 400% then saying you are having a .03% sale. But it's all okay, we got a new credit card! Spend Americans!

That was the other guy that you voted for.

And I love the mockery by the same people that think eliminating earmarks is the number one priority.

Personally, I think this effort is a fine thing to do and it makes sense but just as a simple practical matter. No need to hold a goddamned cabinet meeting about it.

I mocked Bush for the "Spend Americans" and warned that it was creating a credit bubble, methinks you have the wrong target for your inanity. Now we have a guy putting a patch on that same old balloon and ready to work to blow that same bubble...

It's like watching a repeat of Spongebob.

FYI.... it is nowhere close to being 3%. It is not even 1/100th of a percent.
