Obama says gay couples deserve same rights as all

NEW YORK – President Barack Obama praised New York state lawmakers who were debating landmark legislation Thursday to legalize gay marriage, saying that's what democracy's all about. But the president stopped short of embracing same-sex marriage himself.

"I believe that gay couples deserve the same legal rights as every other couple in this country," the president said at a fundraiser in Manhattan, his first geared specifically to the gay community. Coincidentally, the long-planned event occurred just as lawmakers in Albany were debating legislation that would make New York the sixth state to legalize gay marriage.

That served to spotlight the president's own views on same-sex marriage, a sore point with gay supporters who've otherwise warmed to him. The president has said his views are "evolving," but for now he supports civil unions, not same-sex marriage.

how about civil unions for all mr. president....and how about the government get out of marriage, which, is tradtionally religious....

in america a marriage has been boiled down to a contract. thank you government.

Oh Oh, Obama saw his poll numbers and its not looking good, guess he realized he has to start pandering to the faggots for a few votes. Whats next, promise the wetbacks that they will all get to become American citizen's.

Equal rights on this issue is saying that government has a right to be involved.

And government doesn't.

Perhaps your president would now consider giving everyone the right to use language the way it should be used. A movement to re-instate 'gay' as 'happy' would be a good start, followed closely by the correct useage of the word 'liberal' meaning 'Free from bigotry, generous'.
By giving homosexuals equal rights does it mean that I will now be expected to open doors for the more feminine of a couple, or to offer my seat? Rights go both ways..... does that mean rights are ....

(1) Obama favors civil unions, not same sex marriage (or so he now claims, in 199? he sang a different tune).

(2) Traditionally, marriage is both a secular and religious institution, but the only important rights afforded to married couples are entirely secular in nature.

(3) The comment about marriage being boiled down to a contract and "thank you government" is really weird. What the fuck is your point with that one?
