Obama Renews Offer to Cut Social Safety Net in Big Budget Deal

and yet military spending is less than a quarter of federal spending overall.......do you have a graph about where the US stands in relation to the rest of the world with respect to spending on domestic matters?.......

As much as I think that military spending is far too high, it does however act as a back door subsidy to the aerospace industry in particular. You only have to look at the F-35 project to see that is true. It also acts as a way to keep the unemployment rate down

I'm sure I can dig one up .. but it doesn't require a graph on domestic spending to intelligently discern that US military spending dwarfs the rest of the world at a time when it can no longer afford such excesses. We spend more on the military in 2011 than the next 13 nations combined.

President Barack Obama raised anew the issue of cutting entitlements such as Medicare and Social Security as a way out of damaging budget cuts, a White House official said on Sunday, as both sides in Washington tried to limit a fiscal crisis that may soon hit millions of Americans.

Signaling he might be ready to explore a compromise to end automatic spending cuts that began late Friday, Obama mentioned reforming these entitlement programs in calls with lawmakers from both parties on Saturday afternoon.

"He's reaching out to Democrats who understand we have to make serious progress on long-term entitlement reform and Republicans who realize that if we had that type of entitlement reform, they'd be willing to have tax reform that raises revenues to lower the deficit," White House senior economic official Gene Sperling said on Sunday on the CNN program "State of the Union."

Republicans have long argued that the only way to tame budget deficits over the long haul is by slowing the cost of sprawling social safety net programs.

These include the Social Security retirement program and Medicare and Medicaid healthcare programs for the elderly, disabled and poor that are becoming more expensive as a large segment of the U.S. population hits retirement age.

While Obama also has proposed some savings on these programs, he has insisted that significant new tax revenues be part of the deficit-reduction formula, an idea Republicans so far reject.

It isn't like you weren't told that Obama is a corporatist.

since when did ss and medicare become entitlements, both are insurance programs that people have paid in to

the only real problems with ss and medicare are the fact that congress refused to recognize the growing deficit in both programs and kept kicking the can down the road to avoid the political pain of raising the payroll taxes to ensure that both ss and medicare would be fully funded

now that the time has arrived that they can no longer kick the can down the road, congress is having to deal with the under funding of ss and medicare and the promises that their predecessors made

it appears that congress does not understand actuarial tables...or choose to ignore them

bummer

I completely agree with you.

far be it from me to argue whether the US spends too much on the military......but you continue to ignore the fact that what we spend on everything else not only also dwarfs what the rest of the world spends, but dwarfs what we spend on the military.....every time we have a thread about over spending you only respond about military spending.......does that mean you don't give a fuck about all the majority of our overspending?.....

Nothing else that we spend money on "dwarfs" what our defense budget is. Nothing. That's a complete, 100% mischaracterization (or, fabrication - whichever).

Oh, I never said you had such an avatar.

You truly are a fucking idiot.

"IMPOSSABLE, Supercandy said Obama was a SOCIALIST... Dont you remember the avatar with the white faced Obama with the word SOCIALIST under it?"

Now... link us up to where I said Obama was a socialist Jarod.

It's a technical lawyer thing, SF. He clearly claims that you said Obama was a socialist then adds the part about the avatar. The implication is clearly there but he can claim that he never "said" you had such an avatar ... and did. I think in court that would be called a technicality. ;)

My pappy always said, "never trust a lawyer."

for the record, yes, I remember that avatar but do not remember with whom it was associated. I do not recall it ever being associated with SF.

Lol... I know... he thinks he is being clever, but instead is simply showing the board that no matter how foolish we think he is today, he can always trump his stupidity with further ignorance tomorrow.

I know as well that he will never show us a post where I stated Obama was a socialist.

in 2012 defense spending was 18.7% of all federal spending.....if one man was 18.7% as tall as the next man you would call him a dwarf.......

Oh, you and your silly Republican math! I love, love, love how the Heritage Foundation skewers misinformation for the uninformed masses such as you!

The truth is, just the Pentagon's part of the budget is hovering near 20%, once you add in everything else (like pay, maintenance, etc.) the actual number climbs to a massive, whopping 50 percent of the budget!
