Obama Raids WA Pot Stores

If politicians do move toward legalization, the tax revenue argument would be one of their main justifications. It's really a no brainer.

Get it legal - even if you just start w/ medicinal. It will likely have to be incremental change on that front. Unfortunately, Obama has set things back about a decade, inexplicably.

What a badass, he is taking a page from Putin and doing macho stuff himself. Ill vote for any president brave enough to personally go on police raids...

I see it the same as the gas tax. It is used to provide money for the highway system. Those who consume more typically cause more wear and tear.... thus they end up paying more.

Making it legal and taxing it will result in the price coming down from where it currently is. That is a net win for everyone. Especially when you factor in the costs of incarceration that would go away.

I understand your position and acknowledge that it can be taken too far and thus create a black market. I suppose my position relies too much on politicians doing something correctly.

I would like to see an end to the gas tax as well. Better management of funds would be far more effective than more/higher taxes. Like better bid competition at the state level, and fewer 'supervisors' required. Paying 10 guys to do the work of 4 is wasteful.

Decriminalization would be enough for me. It's a middle ground and perhaps more palpable to the majority, since it would preclude wild claims along the lines of "everybody's going to be on drugs now". The important thing IMO is to stop stealing the lives of young people with draconian drug laws.

It's a good point. The worst thing without a doubt is the prison sentences they're doling out to kids on a regular basis; it's just such a waste, and pretty tragic. I mean, it's pot for goodness' sake. Willie Nelson got high on the roof of the WH. Multiple Presidents have smoked, and I'd wager most in Congress at this point. And they all drink. The hypocrisy is sad.

Achually I am against drug laws and do not support this action, but its the same as any other presidental canidate with a chance of winning would do, so it does not affect my presidental vote much, unless Romney comes out for legalizing pot. NOT LIKELY!

It's outrageous. I can hardly think of anyone I know who doesn't smoke at least occasionally. And many of them are conservatives. I think that prison labor has become valuable to corporations, creating yet another obstacle to sane drug policy.

That's not good enough for me. And it bothers me a lot. I'm the kind of person who can't just shrug off the knowledge that I've driven around with a bag of weed in my glove compartment without even giving it a thought. (btw that's the white privilege that Poet writes about but so many idiots here don't grasp or don't care about). And that there are people rotting jail, even young mothers, for the same offense.

Too bad it doesn't bother the President because he smoked plenty.

Maybe it's weird, but I can't vote for Obama because of this. I've been stunned by his policy on pot. He took it in the other direction, and given both his background and campaign, it's impossible to reconcile or justify. I don't know what votes he's trying to win w/ it, but he has definitely lost mine. And I don't even smoke anymore.

It really does defy comprehension. It's hard to believe that in this economy anyone is going to be voting against Obama because he decriminalized pot. I really don't get this guy. He's either the biggest wimp in the world who takes orders from others...or he's a conservative.

He plays it cool, but I think he is pretty gutless. He's afraid of issues like this, because voter reaction is so unpredictable. I think all it takes is someone in his admin telling him that he'll alienate this bloc or that bloc, and it's full-speed ahead w/ over-the-top persecution. There is definitely someone in his admin w/ an old-fashioned view of pot, who sees it as a gateway drug & believes all of the reefer madness crap. At the very least, I expected more of a laissez-faire kind of policy.

Screw him. Like you said - he smoked tons. He wouldn't be Prez today if he had been treated like he is treating users now.

Well said.

or maybe you all fell for the hook line and sinker crap because he's yet another mainstream establishment politician intent on controlling us.

Obama strikes me as the kind of guy who laid off the weed as a youngster. Unless he admitted to using it in one of his books, which I haven't really paid attention to...

Unless you meant it as a slam on his support for this stuff.

Yes, he discussed it in his book. And if I remember correctly I had reason to doubt he stopped at weed, but I can't say on that for sure - it's been a long time since I read the book. I forgot a lot of it.

well I know he said he inhailed and that was the point, mockingly laughing at Clinton and past presidents for allowing prohibition. Now he's a bitch just like they were.
