Obama picks Sotomayor for Supreme Court -- bye bye Republican Party

Darla, what does it meant to "hope" a latina woman would have a suprior ruling over a white man?

The answer: It's a throwaway figure of speech which has nothing to do with hope.

Its a blatantly racist statement.

you keep using that word. I don't think it means what you think it means.

I appreciate the attempt, but I know exactly what it means .. having no bearing on the issue.

Conservative thoughts on many of today's issues are irrelevant and have no bearing on the outcomes.

What do you think it means?

you keep using it in relation to the status of a conservative party, but I assure you they are from from irrelevant, especially if the current non conservative party continues to spend like they have and continue to disregard the will of the actual moderates in this nation.

I'm betting I can read better than you can.

The problem is in your INTERPRETATION of what is "racist." I don't agree with your INTERPRETATION.

It is racist and also sexist to assert that somehow a latina woman would have a better opinion than a white male.

You don't understand words if you can't see that.

Sotomayor gives some examples of what she is talking about in the next paragraph of her speech.

Let us not forget that wise men like Oliver Wendell Holmes and Justice Cardozo voted on cases which upheld both sex and race discrimination in our society. Until 1972, no Supreme Court case ever upheld the claim of a woman in a gender discrimination case. I, like Professor Carter, believe that we should not be so myopic as to believe that others of different experiences or backgrounds are incapable of understanding the values and needs of people from a different group. Many are so capable. As Judge Cedarbaum pointed out to me, nine white men on the Supreme Court in the past have done so on many occasions and on many issues including Brown.

However, to understand takes time and effort, something that not all people are willing to give. For others, their experiences limit their ability to understand the experiences of others. Other simply do not care. Hence, one must accept the proposition that a difference there will be by the presence of women and people of color on the bench. Personal experiences affect the facts that judges choose to see.

A victim of a bad ruling? WHo does THEIR refer to?

Please elucidate here, please.

"Their" is the majority of the court who decided she should have filed her case even before she had discovered the existence of the discrimination against her. They knowingly ignored the intent of the law which was to prevent exactly what took place.

You can most certainly disagree with my characterization, but I know exactly what "irrelevant" means and you don't have to look very far to see examples of my conclusion.

In the case of Sotomayor's appointment, conservatives are irrelevant.

Conservatism is a rapidly shrinking ideology as the Republican Party is a rapidly shrinking political party. Where are you going to get new converts from? American youth reject conservatism .. the base of white males is shrinking .. America is getting browner.

If you'd like to debate whether my conclusions are correct, I'm all for it .. but I stand by the use of irrelevance to describe a rapidly shrinking ideology and political party.

Having a dick does not make you a man, nor does being 21 years old.

What business is it of yours if Sotomayor is gay?
I don't care if she's gay or not, but since her race and gender are a factor, according to you, why not her sexual preference? You seem to be selective on what you want to tout about this candidate.

You keep trying, but I don't see racism.

There are a myriad of issues a latina woman would have a better perspective on than a white male, especially one from a priviledged background.

You can call that racist if you choose .. but I'll call it the diversity necessary to make the highest court in the land more just.

Here's what I call racist .. a court full of old white men.

You can call it whatever you want as you defend the "right" of old white men to control everything.

That dog ain't huntin' anymore. Time to bury it.

Hell, I'd agree with that. There are lots of gay people in America, why not a gay judge?

There is no doubt that one day soon a gay judge will be selected, although not during the reign of Obama The Pussy,

You seem to have changed your tune- first we shouldn't care about it and now we should care about it. How do you keep your opinions straight?

Then I won't be terribly shocked at your future racist phrases directed towards any 'brown or black' that discovers the failures of liberalism/socialism and checks out conservatism. I hope the surprise doesn't bother you as well.
