Obama picks Sotomayor for Supreme Court -- bye bye Republican Party

do you 100% proof the earth was not created in six 24 hour periods?

you need to read the case more carefully, you're spouting nonsensical ruminations

No, I cannot prove it one way or the other as absolute since it was written by man. Nor can one be absolutely certain that a document written by men more than 200 years ago applies absolutely, without room for interpretation, in the 21st Century. Those that hold that position seem to apply that standard only when it suits their purposes.
Regarding the case, why don't you explain how the damaged party has recourse after the decision of the Roberts Court, given the circumstances of the case and if it had been up to an unsympathetic GOP Congress.

WASHINGTON - President Barack Obama chose federal appeals judge Sonia Sotomayor as the nation's first Hispanic Supreme Court justice on Tuesday, praising her as "an inspiring woman" with both the intellect and compassion to interpret the Constitution wisely.

Obama said Sotomayor has more experience as a judge than any current member of the high court had when nominated, adding she has earned the "respect of colleagues on the bench, the admiration of many lawyers who argue cases in her court and the adoration of her clerks, who look to her as a mentor."

Obama now has a lock on the hispanic vote.

Republicans will be republicans and they will attack her .. only increasing the lock Obama now has.

She's an interesting centrist nominee, given her record. I'd say the "lock" on the hispanic vote would only be if the GOP tries to do a Rovian smear campaign against her. But let's face it, ANYONE that Obama nominates is going to be railed against by the neocon driven GOP.

you're the one going off on tangents about the case, you explain it, stop spouting stuff and then expecting others to do your thinking for you

I have grown certainly not to expect you to think for me, or yourself, for that matter. You obviously can't explain where you feel I am mistaken and you thus continue with empty mind-farts.

All very true .. but republicans can be counted on to attack her .. and many hispanics are already responding in ways that does not bode well for the party of irrelevance.

I have no problem with who YOU think are racists.

I do have problems with real ones, although decreasing problems with them as I watch them shrink further into irrelevance.

She has only openly expressed blatantly racist opinion.

“I would hope that a wise Latina woman with the richness of her experiences would more often than not reach a better conclusion than a white male who hasn’t lived that life,”

^^ racist

You guys really thought Charver was a woman? lol. You know, one time this republican guy thought that Ornot was a woman - this was on my old board - and he started talking about his "sausage" and, well, hijinks ensued.

Anyway, I think that Digby has been the only one I have seen so far, who has printed the entire statement in question, and once one reads it, it becomes even more clear just how fucking, excuse my language, absurd, this "racist" bullshit is. First of all, she is clearly speaking of discrimination cases, and sorry, but that is a "doh" statement in that context. And further, as DH has already pointed out this entire bs story is based on the false and outrageously privileged idea that white males don't have a gender or a race. Please, give me a break.

From Sotomayor's speech delivered at the University of California, Berkeley, School of Law and published in 2002 in the Berkeley La Raza Law Journal:

In our private conversations, Judge Cedarbaum has pointed out to me that seminal decisions in race and sex discrimination cases have come from Supreme Courts composed exclusively of white males. I agree that this is significant but I also choose to emphasize that the people who argued those cases before the Supreme Court which changed the legal landscape ultimately were largely people of color and women. I recall that Justice Thurgood Marshall, Judge Connie Baker Motley, the first black woman appointed to the federal bench, and others of the NAACP argued Brown v. Board of Education. Similarly, Justice Ginsburg, with other women attorneys, was instrumental in advocating and convincing the Court that equality of work required equality in terms and conditions of employment.

Whether born from experience or inherent physiological or cultural differences, a possibility I abhor less or discount less than my colleague Judge Cedarbaum, our gender and national origins may and will make a difference in our judging. Justice O'Connor has often been cited as saying that a wise old man and wise old woman will reach the same conclusion in deciding cases. I am not so sure Justice O'Connor is the author of that line since Professor Resnik attributes that line to Supreme Court Justice Coyle. I am also not so sure that I agree with the statement. First, as Professor Martha Minnow has noted, there can never be a universal definition of wise. Second, I would hope that a wise Latina woman with the richness of her experiences would more often than not reach a better conclusion than a white male who hasn't lived that life.

Let us not forget that wise men like Oliver Wendell Holmes and Justice Cardozo voted on cases which upheld both sex and race discrimination in our society. Until 1972, no Supreme Court case ever upheld the claim of a woman in a gender discrimination case. I, like Professor Carter, believe that we should not be so myopic as to believe that others of different experiences or backgrounds are incapable of understanding the values and needs of people from a different group. Many are so capable. As Judge Cedarbaum pointed out to me, nine white men on the Supreme Court in the past have done so on many occasions and on many issues including Brown.

However, to understand takes time and effort, something that not all people are willing to give. For others, their experiences limit their ability to understand the experiences of others. Other simply do not care. Hence, one must accept the proposition that a difference there will be by the presence of women and people of color on the bench. Personal experiences affect the facts that judges choose to see.

No, I knew he was a man and from merry ole' England. I was simply jerking his chain. You know it is rather insulting to be called.... a woman.

As for the rest of your post, read the thread carefully. I posted her comment AND said essentially the same thing you just did.

As I said, I have no problem with people YOU see as racist and don't see racism in what she said.

All your whining and profane descriptions of her amount to nothing more than more bullshit floating downstream. Typical of a small-minded frightened man who's afraid of women .. and shadows.

There is nothing you can do about her appointment. Nobody is listening to you .. nobody cares what you think.

My brother, you're a frightened little man who thankfully was born a white man .. because you do not possess the courage or temerity to exist as anything else. Faced with the challenges most people have to face, including women, you'd be dead in 5 minutes.

You obviously can't read if you can't see how that is racist.
