The Force is With Me
WASHINGTON - President Barack Obama chose federal appeals judge Sonia Sotomayor as the nation's first Hispanic Supreme Court justice on Tuesday, praising her as "an inspiring woman" with both the intellect and compassion to interpret the Constitution wisely.

Obama said Sotomayor has more experience as a judge than any current member of the high court had when nominated, adding she has earned the "respect of colleagues on the bench, the admiration of many lawyers who argue cases in her court and the adoration of her clerks, who look to her as a mentor."

Obama now has a lock on the hispanic vote.

Republicans will be republicans and they will attack her .. only increasing the lock Obama now has.

for someone claiming to be a socialist, as well as a strong distaste for the liberals of today, you sure make a strong showing of hating the republican party. why is that?

Um, why would someone to the left of today's Democratic party, love Republicans?

Republicans are basically irrelevant. No one hardly even talks about them anymore. It's just the democratic right, the centrists who have replaced the Libertarians in arrogance, and the left.

No one cares about the Republicans, but they insist on hanging around, so sometimes, we make sport of them. You know, for comic relief.

See Darla's answer.

Let's make it even easier for you .. why would I care about the Republican Party?

you're a bigot, you think all hispanics are morons and sheep who will vote for obama simply because he nominated a hispanic judge.

:lmao:

Let me guess .. my acknowledgement that African-Americans vote overwhelmingly democratic also makes me a "bigot"

Surely you've got better material than that.

Hispanics, like African-Americans vote their percieved best interests .. as does every other demographic in America.

I think people who don't understand that are the morons.

so you somehow think having a hispanic nominated to the scotus is in their best interest? we are not discussing black people, we are discussing your comment about hispanics, that ONLY NOW does obama have a lock:

Obama now has a lock on the hispanic vote.

it is clear you think hispanics are just a bunch of sheep that will drool after the democratic party NOW because obama nominated a hispanic to the bench. you don't give them credit that they may not in fact agree with her policies or beliefs, you crudely lump them into one mass who see only that a hispanic was nominated and nothing else.

if you don't see bigotry in that, i highly overrated your intellect and honesty.

Wow I am surprised that there have not been more righties on here attacking the judge. Very surprised indeed.

Well, the RNC accidently released their talking points on this nomination, and they've been posted. So, it's a little bit tougher for them. Normally they would just open their RNC emails, go to the website, hit the Drudge site, etc, and then post their instructions here. However...now they are going to have to wait for new unreleased talking points. Or, they will have attempt to rephrase the existing talking points themselves.

And that, could take some time.

ya know, the whole republican/democrat zombie droids need talking points thing......really old and really stupid. especially since it's not really true.

a wise white man with the richness of his experiences would more often than not reach a better conclusion than a hispanic female who hasn't lived that life.

is this a racist statement?

While I agree with the above for the most part.... keep in mind who it was that first nominated her to the federal bench. It was a Republican... not a democrat.

So while I agree that groups will vote in their best interest, allegiances can change. So proclaiming 'bye bye Republicans' is rather silly based on this nomination.

It would be a tad hypocritical given that it was Bush that first appointed her to the bench. Granted that was a while ago, but I have not seen anything on her that would suggest she is going to do a bad job.

Personally I want to hear more about her as I am not familiar enough with what she has done over the past fifteen years or so. Though I will say I was not a fan of her decision to toss out the promotions of those firefighters. That said, I will not form my opinion based on that one decision.

This. I remember hearing in 1994 that the Democratic party was dead. Both sides keep eulogizing each other while the patient still breathes. Unless righties and lefties have somewhere viable to go, the parties will not die. They will lay dormant for a while, not gaining much ground in congress and that will be further evidence for the die hard fringers to make further claims of death. Then a year like 2006 will come along and the dead party will live again, make more gains 2 years later and so it goes. No one is dead yet.

I could not disagree more. There are certainly talking points that the idiots on the far right and far left get and then they immediately run out and start parroting them.

Agreed. Memories are extremely short term when it comes to politicians and parties. I also remember the calls that Dems were dead. Then along came Bush. If Obama does not get a handle on the economy in the next couple of years, Reps could recover in 2012. (there is an outside chance backlash could occur in 2010 against the Dems, but I doubt it. I think they will be given the benefit of the doubt given what Reps did from 2001-2006.)

while true, i generally like to refer to those of us who can actually think for ourselves. I know I don't 'need' or even want talking points, especially since i'm a Libertarian. I'm pretty sure that 95% of the people on this board don't either. You might be in that 5% when you've been drinking or huffing. j/k :clink:
