Sorry, but back in 2006 Obama spoke to members of the Hamilton Group and promised that one of his priorities was getting spending on entitlements under control. This is all documented by in a book by Paul Street, a strong left journalist, entitled The Empire's New Clothes: Barack Obama in the Real World of Power (2010).

The Senate has committed to conservative-supported spending levels set in January by the sequester - deep cuts to domestic and military spending enacted after Democrats and Republicans failed to reach a budget compromise in 2011.
"The Republicans have pocketed that number and pivoted back to deficit reduction," says Robert Borosage, co-director of the progressive advocacy group Campaign for America's Future. "It now appears as if Democrats are just beginning negotiations instead of everyone realizing they've already made concessions."
Bryce Covert, economic policy editor at the liberal blog ThinkProgress, says that unless Democrats start aggressively pushing their priorities, they may win the shutdown battle but lose the policy war.
"If the Democrats don't play offense and get past this defensive crouch, they will never be able to advance their vision," Ms Covert says. "They've got to set goalposts and delineate the field of argument, not just for now, but for the future."
Democrats should be talking about things like universal preschool care, raising the minimum wage, and paid family leave, Ms Covert says. That way, when Obama enters talks with Republicans, Democrats will be less likely to end up with the kind of uneven compromise that progressives feel Obama has agreed to in the past.
"We've been through a lot of crisis battles like this since 2010 - the Democrats start out strong, and the end result is capitulation," Ms Covert says. "Republicans have been very effective in winning spending cuts over and over again."

Obama now knows that the lion's share of the blame is being hung on the GOP and therefore he should extend it just as long as he possibly can and keep it looking like it's the other side's fault. He's set the stage for the people believing it now. There's no big rush.

The White House says there is still no agreement with Republicans in Congress on a possible solution to end the partial U.S. government shutdown and avert a government debt default.
The ideological battle played out elsewhere in Washington as conservative Republicans addressed the Value Voters Summit.
One of them was former 2012 Republican vice presidential candidate Paul Ryan, who chairs the House Budget Committee.
"We need to completely re-think government's role in our lives. We need to completely rethink government's role in helping the most vulnerable. We need to completely rethink government's role in health care. That means we can never give up on repealing and replacing Obamacare," said Ryan.

The bill was stymied on a party line vote, with Reid switching his vote to no at the end to preserve the ability to attempt to pass the measure again later.

Meanwhile, thousands of small businesses are losing millions of dollars due to park closures on a holiday weekend.
