Obama Officially Worse Than Carter

(US News)President Obama’s slow ride down Gallup’s daily presidential job approval index has finally passed below Jimmy Carter, earning Obama the worst job approval rating of any president at this stage of his term in modern political history.

Since March, Obama’s job approval rating has hovered above Carter’s, considered among the 20th century’s worst presidents, but today Obama’s punctured Carter’s dismal job approval line. On their comparison chart, Gallup put Obama’s job approval rating at 43 percent compared to Carter’s 51 percent.

Back in 1979, Carter was far below Obama until the Iran hostage crisis, eerily being duplicated in Tehran today with Iranian protesters storming the British embassy. The early days of the crisis helped Carter’s ratings, though his failure to win the release of captured Americans, coupled with a bad economy, led to his defeat by Ronald Reagan in 1980.

As I recall it wasn't just a defeat but a FUCKING LANDSLIDE!!!!

What are the latest poll numbers for the Republicans in Congress?

Everyone hates lawyers, except their own. A more valid comparison would be a particular congressman polled in his district.

We know the Dems are going to remain in the minority in the House. Barney Frank's departure confirmed that one. He saw the writing on the wall .......even if he retained his seat he would have no power.

As always the truth is more complex than the myths. The US embassy was seized because of anti-American feelings among Iranians. Carter was the personification of America to the Iranians. Further, they were furious with him over his attempt to rescue the hostages, which failed because of one unreliable helicopter.

So they wanted to embarrass Carter, whose final year in office was dominated by the hostage crisis. However, Carter absolutely refused Iranian proposals to release the hostages in exchange for weapons. It is widely speculated that Reagan sent back-channel messages to the Iranians that he would not be quite so firm on that issue and his future actions bore that out. His public stance was the same as Carter's, no negotiation with terrorists. However, he was secretly sending large shipments of arms and spare parts to the Iranians in exchange for the release of the hostages. The hostages were formally released into United States custody the following day, just minutes after the new American president Ronald Reagan was sworn in.

Better than dems. Your fake President is toast.

That says it all. :D

Mine blows. I would literally take any of the other Dems in WA (Norm Dicks or Adam Smith, for example) over the useless Jim McDirmott.

Obama probably doesn't have to worry about facing a Misery Index number which competes with the one that Carter had looming over his head.

How else do you explain the fact that the hostages were released literally minutes after Reagan was inaugurated? The negotiations were all done by the Carter admin but Reagan reaped the credit. I've news for you the tooth fairy doesn't exist.
I was around back then and I have an Iranian friend now who was in Tehran back then. He walked by the embassy every day on his way to work and saw the whole thing take place. The Iranians hated Carter because they knew he was weak, and they respected Reagan because they feared him. You have no evidence that Reagan, as a political candidate then later as a powerless President-elect, had any negotiations with the Iranians in opposition to US foreign policy. The Iranians saw exactly what the American public saw through television, newspapers and political campaign ads: a weak, appeasing, US president and a strong opposing candidate who was willing to kick ass.
