By his ending shall ye know him. Chas W Freeman has now withdrawn from his appointment as chairman of the US National Intelligence Council. And this was his disgusting parting shot:
I have concluded that the barrage of libelous distortions of my record would not cease upon my entry into office. The effort to smear me and to destroy my credibility would instead continue. I do not believe the National Intelligence Council could function effectively while its chair was under constant attack by unscrupulous people with a passionate attachment to the views of a political faction in a foreign country.
Now to whom could he possibly have been referring? The Arab and Muslim world has no doubt, and is telling itself that Freeman was forced out by the World Jewish Conspiracy, a claim that is being echoed among the venomous WJC theorists of the west. Freeman went on to rage against the ‘Israel lobby’ for
character assassination, selective misquotation, the willful distortion of the record, the fabrication of falsehoods, and an utter disregard for the truth.
And then he said:
The aim of this Lobby is control of the policy process through the exercise of a veto over the appointment of people who dispute the wisdom of its views, the substitution of political correctness for analysis, and the exclusion of any and all options for decision by Americans and our government other than those that it favors.
What else is this gross libel against American Jews, through its false and malevolent accusation of untoward and uniquely powerful and damaging political power, other than ‘the fabrication of falsehoods, and an utter disregard for the truth’? And this from a man who headed an organization that received funds from Saudi Arabia and sat on the advisory board of CNOOC, the Chinese state-owned oil giant, and acted as a spokesman for those regimes.
Certainly, pro-Israel lobbyists were vocal in their dismay that such a bigot would be appointed to a key intelligence position. But the fact is that Freeman’s hatred of Israel and bigotry towards the Jews would not have caused him to be removed from office – indeed, how could they since such views are shared by several others in the Obama administration? As for ‘libellous distortions’ of his own record -- well if that were so he and the Obama administration would have laughed them out of court.
No, what did for him was his close links to Saudi Arabia and China – on which, astoundingly, he was never even vetted. No distortions there. Even James Baker, hardly a friend to Israel, seems to have thought Freeman was in the pocket of the Saudis. Ben Smith reported on Politico:
As Rep. Mark Kirk (R-Ill.), one of Freeman’s leading critics, said the appointee could have ‘withstood’ the attacks on policy grounds, but ultimately was torpedoed by the fact that he headed an institute funded by Saudi royalty and sat on the board of a Chinese state oil company. ‘The administration made yet another mistake not doing its homework before nominating someone to a senior position of unique sensitivity, and then learned from the press further and further embarrassing details,’ Kirk said. ‘He was heavily encumbered by multiple conflicts of interest involving Chinese, Saudi and other business dealings that all should have been disclosed long before.’
Far from being a defender of democracy against global tyranny, Freeman had referred to the violence in Tibet against Chinese oppression as ‘a race riot’ and had supported the Chinese regime in its crackdown against the dissidents of Tiananmen Square. As Bret Stephens acidly observed in the Wall Street Journal:
...the leaders of the 1989 protests that led to the massacre at Beijing's Tiananmen Square wrote Barack Obama ‘to convey our intense dismay at your selection’ of Mr. Freeman... So what do Chinese democracy activists have against Mr. Freeman, a former U.S. ambassador to Saudi Arabia? As it turns out, they are all, apparently, part-and-parcel of the Israel Lobby.
Quite so.
Given the unhinged hatred towards Israel and the Jews coursing through the west, which was given rocket fuel in the US by the Walt/Mearsheimer travesty which invested Jewish conspiracy theory with a wholly spurious aura of academic respectability, it was inevitable that if Freeman bit the dust the Jews would be blamed. But the important fact is that an anti-west crackpot will no longer be in a pivotal position over American intelligence. That’s good news for the world. For once, the good guys won.

Is anybody looking into these idiots before they are nominated?
