Obama saluted Bill de Blasio's campaign for "progressive change" and said he would make "a great mayor" for the nation's largest city.
De Blasio, who defeated fellow Democrat Anthony Weiner in a contentious mayoral primary, said he is "deeply honored" by Obama's endorsement.
